RS250 First Ride

Tue May 27, 2008 10:34 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I did my first track day yesterday on my RS. All I can say is WOW!. This is without doubt the best handling machine I have ever rode. In my opinion its pretty easy to ride and pretty forgiving as well. Unfortunately I'm not able to ride it anywhere near its full potential. I was only in level two, but I pretty much owned the corners. The liter bikes walked away from me on the straights but I could drive circles around anybody in the corners. My biggest problem was not running into other bikes on turn-in since I usually had a much higher speed than they did.

I started with the jetting the bike came with (165/170) since the bike came from a similar climate. It turned out it may have been a tad rich, but it was still very ridable, and better rich than sorry. I did move the needles down one clip and that helped, and as well the bike was able to idle for the first time. Even though it was 90-95 degrees, with 90% humidity, I still had to tape up half the radiator to keep heat in it. Without the tape it would only get up to 55 deg. C. Air Density was 92-94. I also started with the gearing the bike came with (16/3Cool and figured it must have been geared for Road Atlanta. For Barber next week I dropped one tooth in front.

Anyway, I absolutely love this bike!

I love the ones with the ram-air inlets through the fuel tank! Very Happy

What does it make, about 76~77hp?

I think the dyno sheet I got with it was right at 80 (+/- 1) at the wheel. But that was a couple years ago. I don't know for sure how much time it has had since then. It will keep right with the 600s down the straight, but they have more torque so they get a slight pull on me off the corners. My guess is that 80 is probably about right.

Very cool bike James...

Compared to four stoke 600 and 1000 I prefer to ride an RS by far...!!! As it was made especially for track use... As you mention above the handling is unbelievable... You can change course at any time even you are in the apex and your head is just a few centimeters from ground...!!!!
The potential of the bike are tremendous... And from my point of view it doesn't matter if you take advance it 100% but the most important is to have fun with the bike and from what I understand you do...!!!

Cheers
Michael

Unfortunately the days of the RS 2-smokers are over. Due to MotoGP250 going to a four stroke format its not likely these bikes will be produced much longer.

There was one for sale in JHB a couple of months ago (NX5). I think it was around ZAR30 000. Only problem is that we don't have a class to race them in.
