Rebuilt my MC21SP can't keep it running

Mon Apr 06, 2009 6:09 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I've just completed a rebuild of my MC21SP. New crank, seals, rings,...ect and several parts along the way that I noticed needed replacing(thank you Tyga). Bike had been sitting for years and not running when I purchased it. I'm running premix 30:1 A747. When I started it for the first time, I kept the reves below 5000 to try and get it to operating temp, but it bogged down after 1min. Smoking pretty bad, but it was the initial start up so I wasn't too concerned. Took out the plugs dried them off waited a bit and started it again with the same results. Also noticed a trail off gas/oil seeping from the exhaust manifold. My feeling was it just needed to run, so the next time I started it jumped on and it was running like a normal two stroke, not completely cleared up but not warmed up either. I rode for about 2min came to a stop light and waited about 1min. When I put it in first to go, same thing bogged out. The plugs have no color yet, it hasn't run long enough, but they are always pretty wet. Can anyone give me a direction I should go to cure this problem? I also want to thank everyone who contributes on this forum. I've used it as a main resource in rebuilding my bike.

Joseph

sounds like it could be flooding, perhaps have a look at the float height or maybe sticking float valves

30:1 is what HRC recommend for A747 pre-mix, DS.

Some 2-stroke oils have been run at 50:1 in some applications, but I wouldn't recommend it myself.

Started again today with a smaller main jet, ran longer but as soon as I let it idle or low rpms for a while it would stop running. It was smoking allot again. I'll check the float hight, they're not sticking. I'll also try less oil.

Thanks

The main will have virtually no effect on slow running, and no effect on idle.

Well I put in a new set of plugs, drained the fuel and added a new premix of 40:1. Started right up and ran great. I rode conservatively for about 20min. I guess I'm a little confused on the ratio issue. Is 40:1 cutting it too close for a spirited ride in the mountains? It seems 30:1 will leave me stranded if I have to stop for a traffic light.

Hmmm, but half the reason for going premix is to get rid of all the oil pump, bottles, cables etc.

If you retain the pump, why would you not just run on it all the time? You'd save oil and not have to carry a bottle around
Confused
