Hi,
A local dealer is selling a 1993 NSR250R Repsol. He says he is selling it for one of his customers. It has no MOT, leaking fork seals, 30,000 km, discs seem quite worn. It ticks over ok but doesnt seem to rev too well.
I rode it along the driveway for about 30 metres but couldnt tell much apart from it felt rough with maybe small end rattle on the over-run. The biggest problem is that the gasses coming from the right silencer felt cool and oil would collect on my hand when holding it over the silencer exit. Further, oil was dripping out of the silencer where it joined the the peashooter expansion pipe. The oil looked watery black in colour and consistency.
The shop owner said it was fuel and 2 stroke oil and if you left it for 15 mins would disappear. My gut feeling though is that it has blown a cranckcase oil seal. What do you guys think?
He originally wanted £1699 (I offered £1200 before I heard it running) (which was accepted) as the dealer said the engine and gearbox were "sweet". I offered him £500 and he said "forget it"
Should I run a mile, as I suspect, or is it worth pursuing? I have fallen in love with these little stinkers!
It's running, which is important, as at least everything is there, but it's likely to need best part of a grand spent on it just to get it to A1 mechanically.
You need to also consider overall cosmetic condition. OEM bodywork in good condition, even if it's been repainted, is worth more than any aftermarket stuff. If the bodywork is good, and the chassis (relatively) unmarked, then everything else can be rebuilt and/or restored.
My advice is walk away if you can't get it for less than £1000 if it's a good looker in need of a full engine rebuild. (That includes crank.) Bear in mind you will no doubt want a dry clutch and adjustable suspension some time too, so that will add best part of £500 to the overall cost too!
You'll probably end up with about £2500 into a nice (but not necessarily a full-spec) bike. For that you will know what's new and what's not. For £2~2.5k you can also buy a nice looking MC21SE/SP that's probably 95% tip-top, but you won't have any guarantees. _________________ Andy.

Just to add that the watery black leak on the exhaust where the stinger joins the end can is indeed just petrol and 2 stroke. It wants a fresh gasket in the joint and she'll be sweet as. My exhausts leak (the same watery black stuff) where they meet the cylinders and i've not been able to reliably seal the joints yet but it isnt hurting anything - i just leave a sheet of cardboard under the bike to catch the drips.
Mine aren't standard exhausts by the way, the exhausts on a standard bike won't leak if all the exhaust gaskets are good. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
if the exhaust is cold and leaking water oily petrol mix it might not be firing on that cylinder, could be a duff spark plug??? would explain the feeling of it running odd??
