Magtek Question

Thu Feb 18, 2010 8:26 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

need to split my rear wheel down for powdercoat...

The black part that is attatched to the wheel that holds the cush drive rubbers...how is it fixed to the wheel as I cant remember.

the reason I ask is that it seems to have 8 or so little plastic noggins which I am concerned will melt during powdercoat.

looking at the exploded view in the workshop manual it seems its part of the wheel.

Anyone?

Cheers.

Ooh, good question. Desperately trying to remember now - as you say the pic in the parts manual doesn't help!

Have you got a pic of the wheel removed showing the bit you're on about?

a drift, hammer and patience

the rubber bits should just drop out once you pull the studs for the ring off (from my very fuzzy memory of when I did it)

I did try this and it didnt seem to do a thing....

you dont mean whacking the drift between the rim and the black thing do you?

I didnt want to do this as I was scared of damaging the wheel.

I used a long extension bar when I did my rear bearings, fed through from the other side of the wheel (obviously!) and tapped with a gert big hammer.

Continuous gentle taps working round the circumference worked for me...

I few month ago I was talking to powdercoaters about my Magteks and they didn't recommend doing it.

From their experience they said there's a risk the heat might distort the mag rims. Now I'm sure they ment the proper magnesium wheels you get on race bikes, but he suggested spraying them instead.

I know Magteks have very little magnisium in them and they arn't the proper mag race wheels, but thought I'd pass on the info.

Well that's good to hear, I kinda suspected they'd be OK. I've got a couple of sets to do, are you sending them anywhere in particular Monkey?

There is a place local to me that has done my last 2 sets and a couple of normal sets as well.

He's pretty cheap and does a good job and io have a few other bits to take to him like the sidestand and screen brace....so if you are in the Nottm area Wink

This should make my conundrom clearer

this is the big black bit I was on about...it this part of the wheel or does it come off?

these are the little rubber noggins I am concerned will melt if I leave the black thing on and just mask it up.

also another question...

is the big rusty metal bit captive behind the bearing as it doesnt want to shift at all?

and the same with this side...on the CBR the spacers just sit in the bearings and are easy to get in and out...these wont shift.

That black bit definetely comes off the wheel, its 3 or 4 years since I done mine but I think it came away when I started to knock the bearings out.

If you cant shift them might be worth applying a bit of gentle heat with a hot air gun or something.

Right Sussed it, the rubber noggins that I was concerned would melt pop off and underneath are 5 Allen bolts removed them with the help of a massive breaker bar and the black thing pops off with the wheel bearing attatched, twatted the other one out and presto one bare rear Magtek..

The front is another matter after an hour I gave up trying to get the bearing to move as because of the steel tube down the middle you just can't get enough purchase with the drift.

It's going to the local bike shop tomorrow and they can do it.
