I'm about to sell the NSR 250 R9L that I've rescued. I have the NOVA cert for it-would I be better off registering it here in the UK, or just sell it with the NOVA certificate and avoid all the hassle of insuring, MOT, tax etc? Advice appreciated.

As I said, finished the refurb, so not a "project" bike any more. Just wondered whether to go through the hassle of transporting it to MOT station, insuring it by VIN, taxing it, then reclaiming the tax! Or just marketing it as NOVAd import.
No need to insure the bike to do a first registration using the V55/5 forum, unless you are in Northern Ireland - no idea why they have different rules. You will need a dating letter and MOT, NOVA reference number/letter. I assume you have the original Japanese registration certificate, you need to send the original off to the DVLA. If you dont have that you will never be able to get a V5. If everything is in order it will take about a week to get the V5.
Hi there I have recently reg an NSR 250 imported from Japan using a v55/5 and if you look at the last requirement of the list you need a current cert of insurance, I am certain you cant tax any vehicle in the UK without valid insurance, and you don't need a title doc or foreign log book if the motorcycle is under 250 cc, The DVLA sent my application back claiming I needed the title doc from Japan but my friend who has reg hundreds of 249 cc bikes from Japan said I do not he told me to I put a letter in explaining this as they had done this to him on several occasions and they sent my V5c straight back without an explanation, that's the DVLA for you,not here to stir the **it ,please check for yourself,

I have completed 3 bikes in the last 5 months with the DVLA on the V55/5
You do not need to have valid insurance unless you are in Northern Ireland, the form is very clear on that specific point. You also do not need valid insurance for the first registration to get it taxed, weird but that is the way it is. subsequently you cant.
My bikes were all taxed on first registration but all of them didn't have insurance as they were stored at my local bike shop.
The Japanese registration certificate is down to individuals processing it, there is a long thread on another forum and horror story of the DVLA losing the original paperwork for the first V55/5, the owners had to go through many hoops to get it registered as the original japanese document was lost.

I am dumbfounded by this, I recently removed my insurance from my track/ road bike to a std road nsr and within a month or so I was threatened by those lovely people @ the DVLA I would be fined for having a taxed bike without insurance ??? unless I sorn it,
And like you say its down to the individual processing the form,
I have another 28 to reg before long I will give it a go,
The form I have states I must have insurance But I have had the form a tidy while it must be out of date,

The "system" is certainly far more complicated than it ever needs to be, and does it solve anything? No! That was clearly evident last year at the No Limits Endurance race when two silver Volvo estates happened to park opposite each other, with identical registration plates!
Why people need to jump through so many hoops to do something legitimately really narks me, when it has no effect on the criminal element whatsoever. _________________ Andy.

It does peeve me that I need a) insurance and b) tax to register the bike. It was taken to & from MOT by trailer, and taxing it for sale is simply a way of DVLA gaining minimum 1 month's tax!
Sent all docs off last week, and am awaiting response. Great turnaround from GB Honda Owners' Club for dating cert.
