Best aftermarket silencer for MC-21 with standard chambers

Sat Jul 29, 2017 12:43 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello guys!

I've taken my MC21 out on a few track days and had a blast. I've now done the wire splice and am looking to put a set of after market silencers on for a different look-and to preserve the standard pristine silencers that are currently on the bike. I definitely want to retain the standard expansion chambers, so any silencers I purchase must be a bolt on fit. I DON"T wish to modify/cut the ends of my chambers to suit silencers that have a different PCD/bolt pattern.

I guess, and without wanting to start a debate, what would be a good GP style silencer for a motor in a MILD state of tune that will bolt directly up to my standard pipes?

The silencer needs to be readily available in 2017, as there are many makes that have come and gone, and unfortunately some of the web sites at present are clearly out of date.

Best Regards, Frank

I bought a pair of TYGA aluminium cans for my MC21 a few months back. The bolt hole centres on the TYGA cans did not line up with flange holes on my mc21 pipes. The flange bolt holes on my MC21 pipes are 44mm centres (I don't know if that is standard for MC21 pipes ?). My TYGA can bolt holes are 38mm centres so a weld on TYGA adapter is needed to make them fit my MC21 pipes. I chose to modify my pipes bolt holes rather than have the TYGA adapters welded on. The TYGA cans gave a noticeable improvement in performance over the standard, much heavier Honda cans.

Happy customer !

Sorry to jump in here. Who claimed that they TYGA silencers were a direct bolt on? Not only is the bolt hole PCD different, but the orientation is slightly different too.

I bought Tyga cans! Because I was smart enough to read where it says they're not a direct fit, so I also ordered a pair of steel flanges from them to modify the pipes. Happy customer!

Do you have a shortlist that you're unable to pick from or you're not considering any in particular at this point?

I have spoken to Dave Swarbrick [http://www.swarbrick-racing.co.uk/] who says while they are no longer listed on his website, he still has the plans for MC21 silencers and is happy to make them to order.

Off the top of my head, I am pretty sure the bolt pattern and orientation is the same across all models, but it wouldn't hurt to confirm that with him first by making a template for an MC16/MC18/MC28 if you require silencers for those models.

He makes both carbon and alloy silencers, although in my humble opinion, the alloy versions are a bit too "old skool" for the 88-97 NSR. They wouldn't look out of place on the MC16 though.

I ran his carbon silencers for a couple of years on my MC21 before fitting my full Ethos system. Be aware that they are proper "race" silencers, and as such are "no thrills". They are fully rebuildable, but there's no heavy gloss to the carbon, and the outlet is simply painted mild steel. They sound and perform great though. Smile I will try and find some photos of the carbon silencers fitted to my MC21.

Please contact him directly for prices and shipping details, and please mention NSR-WORLD.COM if you call/e-mail him.

There is a cheat you can do, buy the steel tyga flanges and weld them onto the chambers.

It worked like a charm for me on stock chambers and aftermarket CF silencers.

It also gives you a chance to respray the chambers and change out the o-rings while you are at it.

IF YOU HAVE A DRILL PRESS YOU CAN ALSO PUNCH OUT THE WASHERS ON THE CHAMBERS TO BE PROPER SIZE.

That's OK if you wish to modify your chambers. Many aren't prepared to do that, especially with standard good condition bikes/parts becoming more and more desirable.

Fair,

But its a cheap alternative from buyin a used pair of used "JHA" knockoffs.

The stock chambers are good, but they need a lil tweaking to open up to their true potential.

We've had great results with the stock chambers and aftermarket silencers, however they are extremely heavy and don't rev. (Well, they will rev, but I mean peak power is made noticably lower than with race pipes, which can affect overall performance.)

The idea with using an aftermarket silencer that is a direct fit is that the setup can be easily reverted to stock, which maintains value, and is also necessary in some markets to pass annual inspections.
