Pentax recommission

Tue Jun 08, 2021 7:36 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Had a few weeks now stripping, checking and sorting. Found a few more tasks to do than expected but on the whole, it seems a solid little bike. Suspension was woefully tired.

Rear has been replaced with a Nitron R2 shock and the front end rebuilt with new seals and bushes along with a Matris F15K kit. It now has decent weight springs in, preload that has some effect as well as adjustable comp and rebound damping.

The motor seems Ok with decent compression etc. The carbs have been stripped and cleaned. Most of the rubber pipes and fuel lines were shot, so all replaced. Samco coolant hoses have gone in.

Rear plug cap came off in my hand due to being rotten, so fresh caps fitted. was only right to rebuild with a few goodies from Tyga, so a few carbon parts and a set of pipes are now in place and looking good.

Chain and sprockets were replaced along with new tyres going on. Fresh 2T oil and gearbox oils are in and ready and cooling system flushed and refilled.
The front brakes need a rebuild as the pistons are pretty crusty, but for now that's about all I need to do. I have a Brembo radial lying around I may fit instead of the original master cylinder, along with a matching clutch lever (The OCD would kick in with odd levers).

Not far off getting ready for the first start and hopefully catch some of this sunshine we have.

Thanks Andy. I'm not great with posting pictures... any help to make them better is appreciated. Likewise, if there's a link to do it properly in the first place, i'll give it a try Smile

I wrote this post a few weeks ago. It's a bit long-winded the first time, but once set up, it's easy.

Interested in that Matris F15K kit. Where did you get it? Would like to find out if it would it be compatible with MC18 forks.

I got the Matris kit from Bike Torque Racing. First experience with the brand, but impressed so far. Quality is as good as I’ve seen from K Tech or Andreani and now it’s back in the frame, it all feels very good. Need to set it up and get a ride to know more, but first impressions are good.

These fork inserts caught my attention too. Interesting that they come with oil already in them. Left me wondering, after install do you put any additional oil into the fork?

There's no oil in them as such. You get a litre of Motrex 5W with the kit though. They're a straight swap for the original units. Once fitted, the oil is added and air gap set as usual.

MOT'd and taxed now. Initial ride on the suspension was very positive. May need a tweak or two but out of the box, it felt very good. calipers were rebuilt with a full kit from Powerhouse, including stainless pistons. Very impressed with their product. Along with the Brembo radial, the brakes are now more than enough to slow the bike up.
Just need a sunny Sunday now for a proper ride out Smile

Finally finished…. For now.

Gave her a 40 mile shakedown run and all went well. Really happy with the suspension. Brakes are very capable and haul the bike up really nicely. Power delivery was great. I’ve missed that 2 stroke buzz. Low down was a little flat, but not knowing what to expect, I don’t really know if it’s normal or needs a tweak. I’ll try tweaking the carbs a little but I can live with it.
The speed the thing picks up in the twisty bits is quite deceptive. Definitely had me grinning like a kid at Xmas.
Thought the clutch made a couple of noises that maybe shouldn’t have been there, so I’ll take a look but maybe I’m being too picky? It didn’t slip and pick up felt fine.
The plan is to give it a once over now it’s been run, carry on running it thru summer and then refresh the motor over winter. Compression is pretty equal across both cylinders, but a tad low at about 115 psi. It’s done very little mileage since 2014 looking at the mot history and I have a niggle or mild concern the seals may be tired. Peace of mind would come from a crank rebuild I guess and new rings at the very least.
So pleased with the bike though.
