I have a set of Magteks I need painting. I have the powder. I remember something like chromate or something having to be used or does the normal way of powder coating work on Magteks? Im not sure if the chromate, or whatever it is, is just for wet painting. And yes I'd like to just send them to Steve turner but with shipping over and back from the UK post Brexit, that is just not an option now. _________________ John 3:7
I don’t think you can powder coat magteks. They do need to be chromated before re painting. I’ve had three sets done by Steve at TPCS and they are always wet spray painted.
Okay so I rang loads of powder coating places today. None of them had a clue. I got every answer from Yes we can paint them to no you can't powder coat Magnesium alloy wheels, and everything in between. I messaged Steve Turner and he said he can paint them. He said he's not sure about the customs process though. I'm not sure what to do now. _________________ John 3:7
At the risk of advocating something naughty... do you know anyone in Northern Ireland? Watching the news (I may be a day or two behind over here at the moment), it appears a load of customs issues between GB and NI have just been fixed... all you need to do is get a mate in NI to send them to TPCS (or my personal recommendation, Reality Motorworks) and then pop over the border pick them up once they're sent back!
Don't tell anyone I said that though! _________________ Andy.

The sad part is that I do not know anyone in the North. Unfortunately I am about 3.5 hours from the border. I might just have to bite the bullet and send them over myself.
The duties to be paid shouldn’t be too much as you’re not paying it on the value of the wheels just the value of the work done on them.
Or you could send them to a friend in the U.K. as a gift, get them to send them on to get the work done and then send them back to you as a gift. Might work.
When I was at GT we used to ask clients to send motors from abroad clearly marked "FOR RESTORATION/REPAIR - NOT FOR SALE - TO BE RETURNED TO SENDER ON COMPLETION".
I seem to recall we also had a special VAT/import declaration/agreement that allowed us to receive such items without import & duty fees. I think the items also needed to be returned within a specified/reasonable time, but no idea how they would check that... maybe just a bit of realistically unenforcable text just to keep us on our toes?!
Sorry I can't remember the specifics now, but you should be able to send/receive parts without too much hassle as long as something along the lines of above is declared on all paperwork.
Make sure the refurbisher understands they need to mark the paperwork/packaging in a similar way for return. _________________ Andy.

That’s how I remember it working when I was looking at sending something abroad for repair
I'll try that so. Unfortunately everything here in Ireland is never straight forward. I'm sure there'll be ridiculous rules I'll have to try and follow.
I can't remember exactly where you are, but Fishguard to Reality Motorworks in Bristol is only a 3 hour drive... 🤣🤣🤣
Just sayin'! Maybe you could explain your predicament, and see if they can slot you in to do the work over a couple of days, and have a little break taking in Wales, or even watching a bit of track action at Castle Coombe (30 mins from Bristol!) 😉 _________________ Andy.

I've actually thought about it Andy but my wife has reminded me that her sister is coming over in July so this is my new fool proof plan. I send the wheels to Steve or Reality and get them to post the to my wife's sisters address who lives near Newcastle. She will be getting the ferry here in July. Problem solved, right?
Also on a side note Ireland sucks for everything, nobody has a clue how to do anything here.
