More problems.

Fri Mar 24, 2023 3:53 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Today I was booked in for the mot so went out and started the bike and warmed it up, ticking over lovely while I put lid and jacket on. As soon as I put it in gear and gave it a bit of throttle it died and would not restart, I checked the fuses under the seat and the ignition fuse had blown so I replaced it and tried to start it but nothing.
After all day messing with it I’ve found there is no spark on either cylinder, the ignition fuse gets hot and the pgm gets warm as soon as the key is on, the oil light goes out if I switch the kill switch to off (is that normal?)
Pgm still cycles if I unplug the tps, the wire splice on the pgm is good, the pulse generators test good, kill switch tests as working, side stand switch is working.
Any ideas anyone? my next move involves a match and some petrol, bloody bike.

It brand new as are the plugs. I’ve been through the whole loom this morning and found nothing wrong and as the pgm is getting hot when I turn the ignition on it must be that.
Unfortunately that probably means the death of this bike.

Well I’ve stripped the pgm down and the capacitors have blown, I’ve ordered some new ones so I’ll see if that fixes the problem. Worth a try.
The cheapest pgm I can find is 1600 quid!

Racer38 sent me a screenshot of a PGM-IV being advertised for £1600, which I think is just obscene! I hope the guy takes it to the grave with him! 🤬🤬🤬

Yeah people are getting greedy with prices now, a second hand replacement is not going to happen and also a replacement will also be 30+ years old and probably on its way out too!
I’ve spent about 50 hours staring at and translating Japanese pages and i now have a list of all the components I may need , I also have a good understanding of how it all works.
Watch this space.

I did try racelabs but he never got back to me.

Is it a PGM-III or PGM-IV you're after?

I'll have to give Matt@TYGA and prod about his "PGM-T" and digital dash he's been working on!

It’s a PGM-III. Has anyone got a broken one kicking about that they would be willing to part with so I can experiment?

Update.
It’s fixed and working! I replaced the 2 capacitors that blew, the fast recovery diode, the rectifier diode and a small ceramic capacitor. Plugged it in and it started first kick, my bike has never started first kick in all the time I’ve owned it and there is a knack to starting it usually but not anymore Very Happy
The tricky part was removing the potted in board from the metal casing because some of the components needed to be soldered in from the back. Massive thank you to Bushman for sending me a dead PGM unit that I could destroy working out how to remove the board from the potting without snapping the board, it really helped me out.
If anyone needs any help with fixing a PGM in the future then let me know and I’ll try and point you in the right direction.
