i have an mc21 thats just had a rebuilt and runs beautifully, well it did for the first few hours anyway. Then it started having power loss at about 6k rpm, and then when i turned the high beams on the bike felt like it had no power at all for about a second until it came back. For the rest of that trip home the tacho would little fits and the power would come on and off intermittently.
Im thinking this is why the mechanics gave me a brand new battery They said the old one was completely dead when they got round to fitting the new parts ( bike had been sitting in their garage unused for about 2 months).
So the next day i bought myself a multimeter and i got these readings off the battery:
No keys in bike - 9V
Key in bike, turned to "on" but not kick started - 4V
Bike at 2000rpm - 9.35V
at 2000rpm with parkers on - 8.4V
at 2000 with low beams on - 8.6V
at 2000 with high beams on - 2.6V
however with these reading s the bike seemed to rev OK.
I then went to kick it into first to get it back into the garage and it did the crazy tacho thing for a second and died. Each time i started it, it would go perfectly in neutral and then die as soon as first was kicked down, all this with the clutch held in fully.
Needless to say i am completely baffled as to what i should do, but u guys seem to think most things are user servicable, so any advice is welcome.
This machine is definatley not charging!!!! You lose the spark if the voltage drops. When the engine is under load the spark will fail completely.
Check that everything is plugged in properly at the alternator side, also the regulator plugs. It could be that the regulator is buggered!
There are a lot of plugs and wires coming from the clutch LEVER side casing where the front sprocket is, just follow them up into the bike and make sure that all is well.
I dont know of any methods to test the regulator (also known as rectifier) apart from what you have already done with the voltage checks, but chances are this is where your problem lies. Im sure someone here has a spare one you could try on the bike for a bit. _________________ NSR250R MC21 (NEARLY SOLD!!)

Santa, please bring me a NSR500 and a SP-2 next year. Pleeeeease....
Thankyou for doing the voltage checks before posting!
If the mechanics fitted a new battery, then your reg/rec isn't working. You should see 13.5 ish volts with the bike at 2000rpm.
It's unlikely to be the alternator, and Honda have a reputation for bad reg/rects, so get yourself another and that should cure the problem. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Yep, Regulator is shot, happened to my mates MC18 a few weeks ago, exactly the same symptoms you have. He changed the regulator and it now runs perfectly.
My money too is on a faulty regulator/rectifier, but if you really want to throroughly check that and other possibilities out, go here to download the best fault finding chart I know of: https://www.electrosport.com/electrosport_fault_finding.html
I hope that helps. _________________ -Jim

You can fit a new regulator from a CBR6 CBR9, NC35 etc I think, which has superceded our ones. It's the same but also has the benefit of cooling fins instead of just being bare!
I know BAT's have some on the shelf and they cost £50 ish from memory. _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
ill try bunging in a new regulator, funny coincidence if that is the problem, my car just had to get that replaced! maybe im doing something wrong with my vehicles that kills regulators?
i hope **** right about replacing with a reg from new model hondas cos finding nsr parts here is a biatch to say the least.
just one other quick thing before i go and buy a new reg, would this cause the problem where the bike died after being kicked into first? i was thinking this was caused by a buggered pgm (please tell me im wrong though!)
It's possible that the extra drag of the gearbox is too much for the engine... _________________ MC21SP Plaything
