Gearbox oil

Thu Oct 06, 2005 3:25 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm thinking of changing my gearbox oil for the first time. Any suggestions? I live in the USA and Rockoil is not available. What kind of oil should I use? Is it 10w30?

Rockoil can be got in the states, Go to NSR-worlds home page and click on the Rockoil link. At the bottom there are some contact details. Both myself and Andy use Rockoil GRO, good stuff.

I'm in the US and I use Spectro 80W Gear oil (not Hypoid Gear oil) for my SE and Spectro Clutch Saver for my R. They are both equivalent to 10-30 and any motorcycle shop that services dirt bikes should have it.

My dipstick is broken off at the cap. Can someone tell me how high the oil should be, so I can use a finger or something to set it?

It is not broken , but looks that way.
It is not a dipstick, only a filler cap!
Please don't set a level with your finger.
You just have to put the correct amount of oil in the gearbox.

OH, my VFR V4 had the came cap with a tiny 3cm long dipstick, thats why I thought...

Anyway, what's the correct amount then?

Thanks for clearing that up.
