tuned mc16 engine

Mon Jul 24, 2006 9:30 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have a spare set of cases and a rebuilt crank for my '16 should the worst happen, my hypothetical question is what barrels/heads and carbs should I fit to make more power as I believe the 16 has smaller carbs and ports than the later models?
I see from another post that 21/28 pistons are prefferable to 18 ones and that 18 barrels have the best ports, meaning I would need to attach 18 pipes, right or wrong? 16 carbs also don't have any tps, how does this effect the peformance? Is it tied into the pgm? If I was to build the engine it would be on the (relative) cheap and hence don't want to change all the wiring to accomodate a pgm unit.
As they say in the best debates....Discuss Laughing

I blew my mc18 crank so i bought and mc16 motor i replaced the flywheel ignition pickups the carbs i stuck my mc18 heads on the mc16 barrels i am running the pgm2 mc18 box also i used my mc18 pipes after all this was done it goes just as fast as the mc18 i also had a problem with the servo motor so i pinned the powervalves wide open it looses a bit low down so you have to keep it in the powerband.

I thought that the 18 had a larger exhaust exit than the 16 but you have used 18 pipes on 16 barrels? does this make 16 and 18 pipes interchangeable? if so this would be GOOD news as my 16 pipes are now at the stage of needing welded.

I put a '16 engine into my '18 racebike, with '18 heads, carbs, pipes and electrics. A bit later I got '18 barrels for it too.

Went pretty good, down a little on top compared to the '18 cylinders tho.

i Don't know if the 18 barrels have larger exhaust ports if they did it would'nt be that much difference in size anyway i mounted them onto the mc16 barrels with no problems what i have is a mc18 not a 16 the chassis are different from the two bikes therefore i don't know if you can mount the 18 pipes on the 16 chassis another hot mod for the 18 is to replace the rear shock with a cbr600 f2 unit it gives you 25cm rear ride height increase and the damping is better also you don't have to change the spring i am 73ks and it works better than the standard shock if i push on the seat with my little finger the shock responds that's how responsive the cbr shock is you have to redrill the top mounting hole not much because the nsr mounting bolt is just a little larger then get an angle grinder and shave each side of the shock to reduce it's width so it will fit in the frame it can be done by most people at home.

Exhaust ports in the '18 cylinder are bigger, as is the exit, but the pipes are interchangeable. I've done it, with '18 pipes on '16 cylinders.

End Can. Did you use the MC16 PV servo on the MC18 electrics?

If you did, it runs backward on the MC18 electrics. Just swap the pulley cables around...
