Buying a NSR in the USA - How did you get yours??

Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:31 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I've located the few avalible at this time from private owners, but where did they come from originally? So I've been doing tons of searching, found one for sale in Miami Florida, not original paint and a polished frame 1993 SP $6500. This is from the guy who actually imported it. Plus it will come with a title.
He goes on to tell me that he can get the bike I want, takes about 60 days, but I'll have the year-model-and color scheme of my choice. He knocks a 1000 off the prices if you prepay him and the bike is guaranteed mine. If not someone else could buy it before I get a chance to.. Here are some prices he gave me.
MC21 SE/SP will be near mint 5500 pre pay or 6500 otherwise/ R will be less
MC28 R 6500 prepay 7500 otherwise/ SE/SP 7500 to 8000 if he can find one, says those are getting hard to come buy.

Seemed to be a real thing, actually talked to the guy on the phone. He knew all about the bikes, TZR,RGV,NSR..... He says he'll get whatever I need ????
Torn on what to do.

Ok, I'll bite as no one has responded thus far. First I wouldn't give anyone money for anything until I get the article, especially if this guy says he can get you any year/any color. Sounds suspicious at best. Put in an order to a thievery ring? I would put the $ in escrow to be paid upon delivery. And is that imported with any kind of title? It would be more than worth the 1k difference to but a bike you can inspect and see what the title/proof of ownership deal is.

These do pop up in the US if you are patient, although prices for anything titled and plated seem to be on the rise. Any of the grey bikes seem to be getting harder to slip through DMV for title and plates. For sure in CA. That said I picked up a titled and plated MC28 in CA recently for about the prices you are looking at so they do show up. Its got Tyga bodywork but is good shape. If mint with original bodywork expect to pay up towards and beyond 9k.

Thank you for responding..
He says the bikes will get a Florida title, it's the legit way to prove ownwership.. This title though is not supposed to be used in getting a plate for the bike. That would be negligent on the owners part, knowing they are registering a non US bike that was never intended to meet our emisions standards. But it can easily be done.
I've read info that all older bikes are actually readilly avalible in Japan, due to rising registation costs as a bike gets older, and even early 90's bikes no longer meet the strict emission standards over there. Supposed to be stock piles of all kind of vehicles?
One member here offered up a unbelievable bike for 11.... Wow ! could go get a brand new 1000 for that much, with a matching helmet ! That'd be great huh? looking like every other tool on the streets on they're new bikes.
May have to call him back once I sell my car.....

The question you perhaps need to ask yourself, is can you afford to loose all that money if it does turn sour?

If you can, and think that you'll get a bargain, then go for it. If you can't then I'd suggest you find a bike already registered - no matter what condition it's in. Every single part can be replaced if needs be!

Very true... And no I can't afford to lose out on that kinda money.
Wish I could just get one that's titled all ready. Hard to come by, allmost impossible on the east coast.

Be patient, they show up from time to time. I used to jokingly look for them on ebay. Never really thought I'd find a titled one. Even when I did they were in CA and I'm in GA. I hadn't looked for a few months but when I did, there was a titled one only an hour away from me.

Technically its illegal to import a NSR for street use. THere was guy that just went to jail for importing non street legal bikes and getting them registered. But his failing was that he did it a whole bunch of times and drew attention to himself. Also: if customs smells something funny they can ship the bike back at your expense or impound it. I think I would be willing to pay the extra $1,000 for knowing the bike is safe in my hands and the guy doesn't walk away with my money. There was a guy iin Texas that an MC21 for sale with title. If I sold my bike I would certainly ask over $10K. These bike are becoming collectors items because they are very hard to get now parts are even getting harder to find Honda's stock is depleted.

Be careful even if you get a title. I bought mine a couple years ago on ebay in GA with a GA title for 6200. Very Happy (94 rothmans 28 18000KM) Great right, well went to my DMV in MI for a simple title transfere and they still as of today have my title and want to do an inspection. Evil or Very Mad The bike has spent a lot of time at home (on the track) so it hasn't been a huge issue but it would be nice to take it out with a plate once in a while. Its great when people with rare 30000 bikes want pictures with the NSR Very Happy

So why didn't you just get an inspection?

That 95 SP above was my bike. It was a mess and I restored it. It's a fine bike now and runs very strong, but I am fairly certain that it has been sold to a fellow that I know. Prices are going up lads so don't give them away. I have been pretty successful getting these bikes titled, but it is much easier and certain to buy one with a title in the state you live. I figure a CA title is worth about $2k these days.

Fortunatly I have agood friend who is registered with the state of Pa to do official inspections on specially constructed and reconstructed vehicles... I think if there is any problem with getting it legal here, I just take it to him, he signs off on it that it is OK for road use, I have to take 4 pictures of the vehicle from all four sides, take that to a notary..they send it in to the dmv. And hopefully it will all be good !!
My friend did it on a retitle of a newer GSXR, don't ask.....
Pa wants you to do that crap all the time, I'm gonna have to do it for my 86' 951 so that I can get a classic plate....That way I'll never have to worry about paying Reg. again...... Nor emmisions testing Smile

Joel, that is a very nice bike! If I had the cash I wouldn't hesitate buying it. I'm doing a restoration on mine with all new bodywork and full motor rebuild so I know what it costs. Maybe you can give us some details and pictures.
