Regulator on MC21

Tue Mar 20, 2007 6:14 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello all! I have installed a used pgm3 on my mc21 trackbike, and before i ran the bike a mechanic checked voltage at the battery terminals and the volts read 12.4 (+-), when we started the bike on the rear stand, and warming up the bike everything appeared fine. We then checked the volts on battery(while bike was idiling and reved to 2-3k and the volts jumped from 13.2 to past 16.5. This is obviously the problem that I had several months ago with a fried PGM.

I purchased the tyga subframe with the rsw rear seat and mounted the regultor in the area where tyga relocated it on the new subframe. Should the shiny aluminum side be completely touching the subframe when mounted ? or should there be a space between subframe and regulator, in which mounting points have a welded spacer that keeps the reg floating (in a sense) and not entirely touching the subframe? or does it matter ?

Also, if i completely remove reg from bike, whats is the ohms or volts that it should read to test if reg is still ok to use.

Thanks for the feedback!

Randy

If air can flow over the reg rec I would mount it so it wasn't hard up againet the sub frame.

If it doesnt have any air flowing over it I would mount it on the biggest bit of alloy you feel you can fit under it to act as its heat sink.

The MC21 reg has also been superceded and the later ones, same as most Honda 6's etc, have fins on the casing to dissipate extra heat. Get one of those if it's an issue...

Hi all, I am thinking I may have to try out one of the fin style regulators. Based on the info I posted earlier, does my regulator sound like it's toast? or is there something I may be overlooking?

Any more than 14.5 out of it and I'd call it toast. A regulator is cheaper than a PGM, and PGM's are getting thin on the ground these days...

Thanks Guys! I have rec'vd info on this Reg/Rec from another nsr owner in Calif. I did speak to the tech support and they said this was the right application. I am going to order this part today and will post up the results/install.

Here's the site:
