I like screaming a 250 - it's what all the fun is about in my opinion, but if you'd ever ridden Matt's 300 then you would almost certainly be a convert; the thing is insanely fast!!
The benefit of the kit, aside the power and torque, is the fact you are also getting BRAND NEW Honda barrels and components to bolt on to the motor.
The downside for me is that it makes for a bit of a "lazy" ride. You can often be a gear up, or in the (usually) wrong part of the rev-range, and the bike will just pull you out of trouble! Mind you, keep a 300 at around 10,000rpm and you will be bloody flying! I still prefer to scream a manic 250 though!
The 300 kit is a world infront of the standard250 unit. I had initial problems with my 250 jetting and fitted the HRC jet kit. Go on.....you know you want one! _________________ Hmmmmm!

How come the bike on the apex leisure site gets 73.6 bhp and its only a 250cc? Just look at the dyno chart

Its been tested on the fwdevelopments dyno as well and they are the distributor for Dynojet in the UK so i think its legit
Why would anyone want a 300 with less power than a well tuned 250. And you can use stock Honda pistons.
Well ive ordered a 300 kit but i must admit ive seen stock RS250 hondas make over 78bhprw so im sure with some work a 300 can be made every bit as good as that.
A stock engined MC21 with the normal bolt ons should be able to make 65bhp and 31ft-lbs.
Dare i say it ive got graphs of Yamaha TZ's making over 80bhp. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...

Does that mean you are prepared to spend more money on getting your 300cc cylinders tuned to get the bhp you should be getting already
A RS honda is NOT a NSR.
People seem to get carried away with the notion that an NSR is just like a RS with lights. They are a pile of sh*t in comparison.Yes its a great road bike but its not a race bike.
They dont go round corners as well or stop as well or accelerate or brake or go as fast.
Mr Honda sold the image just like Suzuki with the RGV etc
TZ is a pukka race bike like the RS running 1 ring pistons, radical port timing, trick ignition that is set so far advanced they are on the limit and a set of works developed pipes that were over 120 decibels, open carbs(no airbox to keep it nice and quiet) and is also not built to last long.
Im sure you could get over 80 bhp out of an NSR but it wouldnt last long either.
I do know the differance between an RS and a NSR, and im willin to put work into a 300 kit. Its what i do for a job.
Im sure with alittle work a 300 NSR will beat, hands down, nearly any 250 NSR. If it will ever beat an RS250 is another thing, but they should end up being close. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...

ive got an 300ccm kit on my mc21. it runs very well with the original carbs.
of course is an rs a complete other bike with more power. on this winter the 300 will get rs 38mm carbs, i think it will go well with this, and the different to an rs will be smaller....
nmtb, 71.5, with ZERO engine work... the only thing that's been touched is the induction. And to put it in perspective even more, the bike made a healty 61 before the kit was fitted. It now makes that same 61bhp 2000rpm lower down the rev range! Put equal riders on that 74bhp 250 and then on the 300cc and see who would lap faster.
How much do you think it costs to get a 'reliable' 74 out of an nsr?? Certainly an awful lot more than the 650GBP that tyga charge for the kit. That's less than a set of Jha pipes... The bike is also set up at a VERY conservative CO2 reading of between 6.5-6.75% throughout the rev range. Most 250 race bikes, whether SS400 class or GP class, RS or TZ's, are set up at around 3.5%. The 300cc at those readings would, according to Dynotech where the bike was sorted, who also have proven national level experience in tuning 2-strokes reliably, make around 76-77bhp. And that's still with no engine work.
and if you're still not convinced, ask tyga how much their 300 is now making... rumour has it around 83bhp. for a road bike engine that's pretty good, especially considering they've calculated porting on the 300 barrels themselves, without the tens of thousands that Honda would've spent when developing the nsr.
so that's how it ONLY makes 71.5, and only wheelies of the throttle in 2nd _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
yup, i agree with all that. I think the 300 overall will be just as much fun as a full flight 250, plus the grunt factor. I cant wait to get mine up and running proper in the new frame. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...

It's a tricky one. I contradict myself on this subject because I love the thought of a 250 being a 250... then I rode TYGA's 300!
It does make you lazy though, because when you are used to wringing the 250's neck to get anywhere and then suddenly have almost an extra 1/3 more horsepower, the first thing you exploit is rolling on the throttle rather than jumping on the gear-shift.
Bear in mind though, that as previously mentioned, 71.5 hp is all coming out of standard parts. All TYGA effectively does is match the 150 transfer ports to the 250 cases and clean them up.
The scope for tuning the 300 is limited really by the crank more than anything else, and don't forget, there is a limit to what the stock carbs are going to flow - the RS is running 38mm carbs, the NSR only 32mm - it makes a hell of a difference once you start trying to extract the last horse out of the motor.
NSR motors with RS barrels (there have been a few) still only throw out HP in the low to mid 70's because of the two limiting factors I mentioned above. The RS makes the power through RPM, ignition, big carbs, ram-air, and eventually exotic fuel. Also remember that the RS that shared similar components to the NSR was discontinued over 12 years ago. Those models were only ever knocking out power in the 80's anyway. It's the latest generation 72 degree stuff that's making the 90-100hp now, not the 90 degree stuff.
As our guest rightly says though, the NSR isn't an RS... then again, a Ford Focus 1.8 isn't a WRC car! But well sorted, in the hands of a competant rider/driver, they are the next best things for the money! They can both be made to handle, they can both be made to go, and they can both win races against more exotic machinery... I've seen it done!
I for one would like to see ram-air as the next 300 option! :lol:
