I'm Happy. Power Loss Banished. The update....

Laughing Shocked Cool Embarassed Wink Very Happy

Just been for a spin on the bike.
These thing's should be banned (oop's they have been!) Wink

The connector on the black/yellow wire to the front coil was a bit manky, easy.
I snipped and stripped some new wire. The copper wire was Black to the core. Shocked
I got hold of some new black/yellow (bit bigger cross section tho), snipped the existing black/yellow from the PGM connector (with a view to soldering the new to existing wire), but there was still black tarnishing visible! Shocked

I had a real chew trying to remove the dinky little pin connector from the terminal block, I soldered the new wire directly to the pin connector and tried to refit.

Ha,ha yup the new heavier wire wouldn't now fit into the white multi connector for the PGM. Time for a bit of brute force and ignorance.... Embarassed

I tie wrapped the cable (in sheathing) to the existing harness to the front coil.

I've just been out (cold wet night, but hey I'm excited!)for 1 1/2 hour's.

The bike is transformed, the engine note alone being louder, crisper and more "zingy" (good!), the motor pulls strong with a satisfying build through 6,7 and 8 thou, with just a little extra "kick" at about 8ish, just as it should be I guess.

Top gear still feel's hopeless below 8thou. The bike is still running stock gearing, though I've got a 42t rear to go on.
Will this be enough? Confused

Mind I'm 6'2" and 14st won't help....
I also noticed the back wheel was dry, and rear disc was fairly hot, so that might be binding, got new pad's to go in anyway. Rolling Eyes

I'm amazed how this bike kept running without misfiring, with the coil feed wire in the state it was, doesn't sound typical Honda to use crappy end of roll, bargain basement wire! Razz
All the other wire's look good from what I can tell.

I get a feeling I'm not the first owner of this bike that's been baffled by this problem,
The previous owner spent £600 on 'the electric's'.
The motor run's sweet, did the owner before that have it rebuilt? (certainly has good compression).

It's taken me (intermittently) from the end of July to trace this fault and nearly given up on several occasion's.... Sad

Many Thank's to everyone who has contributed to my ongoing queries.

I am now going to SHUT UP! Rolling Eyes

P.S. I may take the carb's off once more, just to check that there's no Pond Weed wrapped around the crank!!!

Good going you got it sorted!

Im 6ft 2" and 16 stone and my bikes got a 38T rear fitted. It will pull flat out in top with no prob so yours should easly pull you with that gearing.

With stock pipes the bikes do pull well and only have a small kick at 8 tho, but tend to run out of puff (not much over rev).

Hi,

If the motor's kept spinning (accelerating) everything seem's fine, it'll pull through 8k rpm and keep going, it's most noticable if at a constant speed of about 70ish, the bike seem's a bit reluctant to accelerate.
Confused
The bike is currently bog standard, except wire splice.

Bugger, maybe it isn't sorted....

I'll have a proper run in daytime and dry. Wink

Glad to hear the problem's been traced.

You may find you need to do the G.P.S. splice too. This will make the PGM think it's in 3rd for 4th, 5th, and 6th and give better results for the top end.

Andy.

Andy,

I've done the GPS wire splice. Rolling Eyes

As I was getting slightly differing resistance through the GPS in various gear's (particularly if the lever was moved up/down in a gear), i.e. not a perfect earth, Confused
I disconnected the GPS multi plug and ran the 3rd gear wire from the PGM (light green/green) directly to the battery earth.

I figured it's one variable that I can bypass and therefore eliminate.
1st and 2nd still feel fine - running through '3rd gear'. Wink

Do these bikes (stock) normally pull through 6,7 and 8 thousand rpm in top, from a constant speed situation (ie 60-70 mph)?

Mine will if you roll the throttle on, but not if you snap it open. It will in the lower gears but once out of the power band in top you have to roll it back on steady. Thats just mine though. My freind bills is liek that too. Once your back above 8 you can do what you want tho.

Ok, thanx Stephen.

Like I say a cold wet night, temp gauge hardly got up.
The bike didn't bog or anything, just seemed a bit lacking in top.
Above 8k ok.
I'll try being a bit more progressive with the throttle next time Rolling Eyes

Just to throw a spanner in the works,my stock 18 with stock gearing will pull from 5 in top you can bang the throttle wide open and it pulls. It takes a while to get to 8 then off it goes to the red with a bit of over rev.It does improve if you feed it in between 5&8. Mr. Green
