I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 1989 MC18 with less than 20,000 km. I've been told that all NSR 250's were blessed with weak gear boxes, including the MC18. Is that true? If so, what part of the 'box is weak?

Are there any other notable problems with this model of NSR I should be aware of?

Apart from its the best of the NSR's there are no problems.

The gear box is so bad Honda fitted it to the RS250

About the only poor point on the MC18 gear box is the alloy lever that attches the gear lever to the gear box selector spline. Its not even really a gear box part.
