water pump seal question

Mon Mar 31, 2008 10:28 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

hi, i am thinking the water pump mechanical seal on my mc18 r5k has gone, losing water from the rad and gearbox oil is grey Sad not been like this long as i keep an eye on the water regular and changed the gearbox oil recently and it was ok looking.

is the seal hard to change, its the ceramic type i think, common to many hondas so the part is easy to get.

are their any hints, tips, things to avoid doing when fitting the seal ? obviously i will need clutch cover gasket, pump gasket & seal set

i ask because i hear they are easy to damage when fitting, anyone know the correct install method ?

one more question ! is the mc18 clutch cover (wet clutch) & water pump gasket the same as the mc21 gasket ?

cheers

richie.

From the looks of the parts manual, it shouldn't be that hard, as it's a single sided seal (as in the seal is only on one side of the bearing).

While your in there, you may want to check the impeller shaft and bearing to make sure they don't need replacement. I know that on the RS250, the impeller shaft needs changing a good amount due to wear from the seal cutting a grove in the metal on the shaft and not allowing a good seal.

When you pull the shaft, you can clean it up real well with some super fine scotch brite and check where the seal sites on it. If it's grooved all that much, you may want to replace it?

That's what we need! Very Happy

Never needed to do one myself, so can't comment. All too often I get it in the neck for not answering tech questions, but it's nearly always because it's something I've not had to previously undertake.

oh, on a side not... on the RS250 you can actually tell which seal is bad by what drips out of the hole on the bottom of the water pump.

The setup up is an outer seal and an inner seal. If the outer seal is bad, then you will find water dripping. If the inner seal is bad then you will find oil dripping. Of course since your in there, it's just as easy to do two seals as it is to do one.

cheers charles, i will check the shaft and replace if required, i hope its the same as the mc21, bike is MC18 R5K, new parts are getting very hard to get.

i will report my results once i get back my holiday, if i understand right its a ceramic type seal, similar to the cx500 one !! (and many other hondas) they needed changing fairly often and were easy to break on fitting, never done it before (or owned a cx500) so will see how it goes.

andy , your help & advice has been invaluable to me so i'll let you off this time ROTFLMAO

It's been a while now since I replaced all those parts. If I remember right, if #3 (spring thing) is removed then you can do it with out taking the whole side off. I have a R model & the case cover was off when the parts were replaced.
