Start bike with cordless drill ?

Tue Jun 24, 2008 6:17 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey everyone,

Just like to know if anyone done this to their bike? I am after a adaptor tool which you can use with a cordless drill to start your bike..

I have seen one someware for the TZ and RS's but cant remember where..

It can eighter be an adaptor which fits on the kickstart shaft ( might be less work ) or a complete unit which will go where the kickstart unit goes inside the casing!

Let me know what you think!

Chow
Mario

Bearing in mind even multi million $$$$ gp teams just bump 2 strokes I fail to see the use.

Its a bit difficult to bump the bike when the tirewarmers are on you know...

Far better to start the bike and warm it up while still sitting on the stands with the warmers on! Also you never know when Murphey will show up...maybe just a minute befor your race ! Smile Then you need to make a plan quick !

Yeah kickstart works fine, might be a weight saving option and most of the time I have to do eveything one raceday..even the kicking...no one to give a hand! Sad - Drill will save me some energy! Lol

Mario surely by the time you have added these parts to your race bike you will have lost any weight savings you had gained by removing the kick starter and cost yourself a lot of money.
I cant see how it would work any way without some serious design work, your kick start shaft does about half a turn and stops, a cordless drill doesnt!
As fonty stated all the 2t teams just bump start the bikes its only high compression four strokes which need assistance and they normally use something to spin the back wheel to bump start the engine.

Some organizations dont actually allow kick starters. So that means bump start only. Why? Well I have come across more then one kick starter on the track. They vibrate off unless one properly secures the pinch bolt. Since the majority of club racers have a hard time wiring things like brake caliper bolts, or oil drain plugs, they cant be trusted to wire a kick starter as well.

The drill adapter actually uses the bolt for the fly wheel to spin the crank and start the bike. Most bikes you either need to drill an access hole in the fairing, or remove the fairing to get to this with the tool.

As you have already found, Accu-Product is the ones that carry this tool.

Am I right in thinking that spins the crankshaft and not the kickstart shaft?

yes you are. I don't think you would want to put something on the kick starter shaft that didn't stop after a certain point (as pointed out previously). You would either damage your kick starter internal gears/stopper, or destroy your drill.

Or break your wrists when the shaft hits the stop and the drill keeps spinning ROTFLMAO

Reality is bothering with either (tyre warmers or warming your engine) is a waste of time at 95% of club races here as you'll be sat in the holding area for at least 10 mins anyway, plenty of time to warm the engine and for your tyres to cool Rolling Eyes

Point taken font, but I was not talking about club races in the UK...

Here in SA we start the bike, yank the warmers off, do a warmup lap and then wait for the 30sec,5sec GO! Razz
