Its an MC21 With a TYGA 300 motor (the Campsa Honda that was on the home page once)
I recently got home from a trip to Scotland (1000 miles in 3 days). On the last leg the bike ran but I lost all lights. All except some glimmers in the warning lights.
Optmate brings the battery back fine but it quickly returns to nothing when out with the headlight on.The bike actually runs fine though.
Before I get too involved with the spanners, (I don't know what I'm looking for) is there a simple check with a meter that may pinpoint the fault.
I'm hoping just a replacement regulator will do it but electrics baffle me.
If thats the case has anyone got a spare on a shelf?
Thanks for reading this, Mal. _________________ if it had a tail - it would wag
Put a multi meter across the battery with the engine off and check voltage, helps if it's a little flat.
Start the engine and hold the revs up a bit 2000 - 3000 rpm should do it. You should have a reading of 12.5 up to 14.5 volts. If not pound to a penny its the reg. you can get them from that internet site that Andy dislikes. But i never told you that
Check all the connections first though, don't forget the earths.
Some one nice has bolted a big fat lump of ally to mine and attached the reg/rec to that, and flipping heck that bit of metal gets too hot to touch..... _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
If you don't have a decent chunk of frame to act as a heatsink for the reg/rect then you really ought to get a plate on it, or buy one with fins. Sticking it in some airflow is also gonna help. They have to dissipate all the excess voltage / current generated when your engine is spinning at high revs, and if there's nothing to take that heat away, they fry. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Just checked it and......
Battery reads 12.6V when stood, ignition off.
Then 14.7 when the bike is on idle.
Then 20.8 at a steady 3,500 revs, and I suspect it just climbs from there.
I did notice the faintest bubble trying to emerge from where the battery was sealed after filling from new too.
Is this all a symptom of the regulator please?
If so can someone quietly point me in the direction of a replacement, Thanks again. _________________ if it had a tail - it would wag
Yes, it's toast. Don't ride the bike until you've replaced it as you can damage other things not designed to run at 20v.
Just about any Honda unit will do, and most aftermarket ones too. They pretty much all work on the same principal. As someone has said, a Blackbird reg/rect will fit and is a little more robust, so why not contact one of the aftermarket guys like M&P or MPS and get a pattern one? _________________ MC21SP Plaything
