mc21 barrels on mc16????

Mon Feb 02, 2009 12:57 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Has anyone tryed this combination? just wondered if it was possible, stripped engine last week and found one of cylinders has a chip off one of the ports(think they call it the boost port at the rear), and also a crack in the bridge between exhaust ports, nice!.Not sure if it's worth getting them repaired and re-plated when i could spend money on a secondhand set of 18's or maybe if i can 21's and have more power.

'18 or '21 barrels will work.

Personally I've found repaired exhaust bridges tend to crack again very fast so if you're worried about it go for another pair of barrels.

As has been discussed in a couple of threads this week '18 barrels on a '16 are the way to go if you want improved performance.

Cheers for reply, Ive been folowing threads on 18 barrels on a 16, just can't find anything on 21 barrels on a 16. Trying to find out if they work as well as the 18's? or to just look for some 18's which i know people have tryed, Will be using Ta21 carbs as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

'18 barrels are best, even on a '21 motor.

The porting of the MC18 barrels is the closest of all the NSR's to the RS/F3 porting. MC18's always produce the best stock power figures and are under rated in my mind.

Although MC21 barrels are stronger and the cooling is apparently more efficient! Wink

The casting around the head studs in the barrel can be easily broken on MC16's and MC18's, and I've seen several that have cracked.

Any barrels and heads from a later model on an MC16 are an upgrade. Just make sure if you use MC21 or MC28 that you also use the correct (matching) heads.

Very true Andy.

Though I'm proud to say I've broken more '21 barrels than '18 ones Wink

Do not screw the cylinder head studs all the way home when replacing them. I use a locking compound now, normally 242 and then just lighltly seat them.
