First NSR.

Wed Mar 25, 2009 10:10 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Just took delivery of an Mc18 in need of some TLC. Smile
Basic plans are Check it over, sort stuff out and get it ready over the next few months. Well, thats the plan anyhow. Wink

First question, Bodywork.

This bike is gonna be used on the road (a little) but will definatly be out on the track! Just plain white bodywork will do it for me. I REALLY like the Tyga stuff, but have seen the normal fiberglass stuff about. What do you think? Worth the extra? Cost is an issue here (again). The standard bodywork it came with is VERY tired........... Crying or Very sad I think it would cost a couple of hundred at least to sort it out at a shop, but i'm only guessing here. You may know otherwise.

All opinions/experiences welcome.
Cheers guys

Hello Tone18 and welcome to the forum.

Horses for courses regarding the bodywork. TYGA's Spark fairing and GP seat work well on the MC18, and they are really the only people you'll get new MC18 bodywork from these days. You may get hit with import duty and VAT on top of the price though, remember that!

Personally I like stock pattern bodywork. You can get hold of that fairly easily still. You may struggle to find MC18 race/fibre bodywork second hand unless you go to Yahoo! Auctions Japan.

Thanks for the welcome Andy. Very Happy

I think the tyga stuff might be put on the back shelf.......for ever! Shocked
I have had a quick look at the rs stuff, anyone ever fitted it??
I don't mind a bit of cutting and stuff but just how much??? Confused

Been in the garage pulling bodywork off and generally checking it out................oh my gawd, it's not pretty. Like most faired bikes the grime has built up and...well you get the picture.

Most obvious problem, number 2 solenoid is missing. The t-piece has been broken off aswell. Shocked
can't see where it plugs in neither? Can you still get these? Think i'll be looking for a nsr friendly breaker!

Funny, it still runs ok but i've only had a short run on it so......
Thanks for your patience and would appreciate any help you can give Rolling Eyes
The way this is going i'll be on the keyboard as much as in the garage Rolling Eyes

All fun and games eh Wink

Fontyyy's got an MC18 with RS fairing on it now, and "part" of an RS seat too. Looks good now he's tickled it with some spray cans and sorted the suspension.

That too is in the Members Garage section.

Indeed, Andy thinks this is the best pic, but that's just as it looks like an RS;

However this one shows the bodywork profile off better;

The panels have just been drilled to match where the NSR mounts are and the real RS mount points filled in.
The screen brace is a home made thing, an RS ally one might do the job better.
You have to run the clip ons a couple of cm down the fork legs.
No idea if the stock pipes will clear the bodywork, mine runs RS pipes.

But it so looks the part.

heres mine with 1998 rs fairing and seat
had to do quite a bit of trimming for the side stand , and near the fork legs as i could,nt turn the bars without it fouling , had to drop the clip ons around 20mm and i trimmed the area above the clip ons to give more clearance
had to make new brackets and drill new holes in the fairing

for the seat unit to fit i had to make a new subframe as the front of the seat was to narrow to fit the standard one

Very Happy Thanks for all the replys. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The pictures are great. Really helps when trying to decide which route to take. Mike1972's looks VERY nice, but a new sub-frame! OMG!

I think when you buy bikes like these you have all these major plans in your head, then when you start to strip em down it's like........BANG...reality steps in Shocked Trouble is i just wanna get out and cane the thing! Twisted Evil But i'm old and wise enough to know it would almost definatly end in tears. So, guess i'm gonna have to learn some patience...... Crying or Very sad

Carb wise, i'd like to return it to standard but it's running filters, no airbox, oh, and the MIA solenoid. From what i've read so far i'll be V. lucky to find an airbox.
If anybody has any idea's which is the best route, let us know.
Andy.......... Wink Wink Wink
