I know a Penske dealer that always said they were very different to say an Ohlins in both set up and build. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
Thanks for the reply. I am putting this into an MC21 R7L roadbike with stock plastics etc. I was hoping to see how other people had mounted their shocks and what, if any, issues they had.
Firstly, it is an 8987 series with remote reservoir as shown here:
I had to get it made interstate, as there is no local supplier in Melbourne. Guy deals exclusively with m/cycle suspension, and supplies Ohlins too. He assured me that he'd done NSR's before and building by distance, although not ideal, would not be a problem.
It first arrived with a very short hose, and an angled fitting straight out the front of the shock (as on the website). Builders reply was that was how Penske spec them for this bike, and to turn it around & mount it (the res) on the subframe. Not much space or access for this, and not too happy about the reply. So sent it back. Along with numerous emailed pics of this shock, and an OEM SP shock fitted to the other '21 showing the required clearances/space etc.
It arrived again, with an aftermarket (ie non-Penske) hose, the right length, but with an ungainly bunch of fittings to make a 90 degree angle and get the hose heading in the right direction. Now can't fit the airbox. He's starting to get agitated because I want to send it back again to get him to fix it at his expense, and now he says he's out of pocket. And after a few days he reckons Penske don't have any fittings that will allow the shock to fit in the space available. This didn't impress me much. Starting to think I should have just gone with an Ohlins.
I wanted to hear how others had fitted these shocks to a '21 without these hassles. Glad you asked?
Normaly the hose comming out of the shock body is just a 0 deg banjo bolted directly to the body.
With the right lenth hose and the bango facing right I've never had any problem fitting any after market shock to an NSR with the res' in the OE position.
The HRC F3 shock has the banjo the other way around but this was designed to have the res' mouted on the sub frame. Something youve found cant really be done on a road NSR.
If he sold you a shock to fit your bike then fit it should. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
He mentioned that the bajo option wasn't possible due to incompatability between metric banjo fittings & the non metric threads. Might have to send it to Penske themselves to sort out.
