It is a 1991 model NSR250R, decent condition, but I've never owned a 2-stroke. It's been sitting idle for about a year. What needs to be done before I give it the first test-kick? Seals, fluids, other checks?
Thanks for any advice. If I purchase, I'm sure I'll be bugging you all for lots of other info.

Hi,

Start by draining all petrol and replacing, remove carb's drop float bowls and lid's, clean, remove/clean all jets (make a note of whay's where and keep for future reference (ie if it all goes tits up (not speaking from experience mind....)))!
Measure float height.

I would remove the stuffers (bits the carbs bolt to) have a peek at the crank for debris or corrosion and squirt a bit of oil onto the moving parts for first start up.

New plugs, check power valve ajdustment and make sure they're free best to remove and lube the cables, probably the valves too.

Have a good look into the bores for damage - plug holes/exhaust ports.

Squirt a bit or 2stroke into the bores and kick over a few times.

Safest to drain oil tank and put fresh Fully synthetic (only) 2 stroke oil in .

Make sure the bike has a good battery on.

Start up outside or you're sure to choke as your steed creates it's own little micro-climate!!! Laughing

Enjoy.

Regard's, Phil

as long as it has new fuel, good plugs, a good battery, good quality 2T oil (i dont know if that goes off) and gearbox oil Very Happy , you should be good to go.

there are a lot of things to go wrong with a twostroke, but by buting an NSR you are looking at buying the best.

take someone with a bit of twostroke knowledge with you when you go and look at it. hope that helps a bit.

Ahh, give it decent gas, oil - fresh plugs and run the byatch.

Fly or die I say ! - if a seal is going to let go or something has dried up and died then better know about it right away instead of 20 miles from home.

Most of all, enjoy the 2 stroke experience !

Thanks. The bike is owned by a friend of mine, well, actually his fiance', so he (she) doesn't mind if I want to wrench on it for a while. As far as maintenance, is there a schedule of when the rebuilds should take place? I don't remember the mileage, but I'd like to be able to determine if it's time for a new bottow end, or new rings, etc.
Thanks again.

Honda's life span is documented at:

Top end: 20,000KM
Crank: 30,000KM

Now that doesn't mean that the parts won't need replacing prior to that, but they also could go longer.

Since it's hard to know exactly what the engine has lived with for it's life, those numbers are very general. You are best to look inside if you can, and determine where it is in its life by actually looking at the engine.

A top end will cost about $250.00, this doesnt include new heads, plugs, or power valves. This is just two pistons, gaskets (top and botton), small end bearings, wrist pins, and circlips. Then of course there is your time, about 2 hours. A full engine rebuild? Well it's hard to nail down a cost, as it determines what seals you replace, what gaskets, what "other parts", etc... However it can be done in about 8 or 9 hours (of course you will want to let the cases setup for 24 hours after they are sealed up before you start it up).

what we need to know is the price of the bike. if its the right sort of money its no problem so long as it runs and sounds ok. you can always find a home for a MC21 even if its shagged. you,ll get more for it on e bay if it is Laughing Laughing Laughing

The asking price is $3000 U.S. Best of all is that the seller apparently was able to get it tagged in California. I don't know how, but I should, therefore, be able to get it tagged in North Carolina, where I live, and drive it on the street. It's in good condition, not great, far from perfect, but good. It has carbon JZA cans on it, but I think is otherwise stock. The front upper fairing is different from what I've seen on the net so far, it has a single round headlight, maybe 4 inch diameter, mounted off-center to the left side. Anyone know where this came from? The decals on it look original. I'll send a picture if you'd like to see it.

You may want to check with your NC DMV first and make sure about getting it tagged. I once talked to someone that bought one with a valid TX tag but he could not get it tagged in GA. I bought mine with a GA tag and it transferred fine. I'd just hate to see another person buy one with the intention of putting it on the street and things not work out.
