NSR250SP MC21 Vin Verification

Fri Sep 25, 2009 8:35 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Currently there is an Ebay auction for a 1992 NSR250SP MC21 , however the bike has been re-sprayed with a Fortuna livery. I sent an e-mail to owner asking if he could provide the VIN number for the bike to verify if it was actually a NSR250SP Rothman's edition and he sent it to me:

MC21-1061962

Can anyone verify that is actually a Rothman's edition NSR250SP MC21? If not, whom should I contact at Honda in order to determine the authenticity of the bike. Thanks.

FYI, here is the ebay link:

I'm not sure if it can be positively identified solely from the VIN alone due to the nature of Honda's records. There was a recent thread on this. I guess what you have to go on is the presence of all the SP components.

By the look of it, what's the big attraction to this bike? It's had the most desirable feature (the Rothmans colours) removed. The pictures aren't really clear enough to determine if it has Magtek wheels (there are what look like reflections off the bead on standard wheel rims in the pics). The seat unit is an aftermarket replica. You can't see the top of the forks clearly to confirm the presence of the SP fork adjusters, the subframe has been painted/coated so you probably won't have the decal specifiyng the colour and model codes. The front discs appear to be standard R spec units.

It has a dry clutch. Wow.

Seems a bit dubious to use the Rothmans SP tag as a selling point for this bike. Still, you pay your money and take your choice as the old adage goes.

There are a number of NSR's already in the States, and they come up for sale fairly often. Personally I would wait until one in your own country becomes available, because at worst, even if it's on the east coast, it's only a couple hundred dollars and short plane ride away to go and see it in person.

Even if you buy one in the US on eBay and turn up to buy it and it's not what was advertised, at least you can turn around and walk away. Buying one from abroad from an unknown source is like playing Russian roulette. The seller may be genuine, may honestly believe it was a Rothmans SP, and may end up supplying a cracking deal, but... buyer beware!

Also, if this bike is imported into the States it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY you will ever get a title for it. You are far better off searching Stateside for a titled bike. j911brick has/had a very nice MC21SP for sale in the Classifieds for some time, but if that's what you want, expect to pay proper money for one.
