NX5 - Luca Cadalora GP250 Rothmans Replica

Sun Jun 07, 2009 5:49 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Base bike is a 1996 RS250 NX5

I have now got a frame (without the Spondon Headstock mod!), its in really good condition (and took some finding).

The RS250 shape / design followed the year earlier Factory NSR. So Cadalora's 1992 NSR gave the fairing / bodywork shape for the 1993 RS250. A set of circa 93 airtech bodywork will be needed. Need to find an original RS250 rear rim to replace the current Marvik. Then some detail changes such as footpegs, instrument holder (plastic cups to alloy cups), Brembo calipers (change from goldline to raceline), Carbon-Kevlar cans etc.

Hopefully, it should turn out something like this......

Not yet Andy Laughing But I am planning to run it at a track day this year, maybe the 2 strokes day at Cadwell. Need to get some proper tyres on it first, heavily treaded inters at the mo. Gotta be full slicks Razz

I'll probably crap myself first time out, but that's half the fun Razz

I'm booked onto a Cadwell track day this month, so I can at least see which way the track goes riding my MC21. First timer at Cadwell n'all Wink

It took a lot less effort to get the RS down to the rolling chassis than the NSR.

I sourced a frame in really good condition, to replace the 'Spondon Mod Headstock' frame which is currently on. I've a almost new swingarm coming in from Japan from Moriwaki Man, along with the original RS rims. The period bodywork should be arriving soon from Airtech. Some work to do on the Ally Fuel Tank. Engine will have a full rebuild and then set up by Ian Emberton (Ian E). Plenty of work, but a good winter project.

I'm already missing the smell of AVGAS & Castrol A747, so roll on Spring!

Air tech tail unit fits well, and more importantly exactly the right shape for a '92 Cadalora NSR.

Just split the crankcases tonight..............

Just reading in the main forum your bit about where to have this painted.

The thing is obviously you want it absolutely spot on, you've got the right shape bodywork and the rest is as near as it can be and retain any likelyhood of being able to be used (if you did actually manage to find a real works NSR frame and motor would you actually use it?) so I reckon you've got to find someone who realises what you want. Dream Machine might well make it very nice and shiney but you can bet money they'll pay about zero attention to getting it looking like Cadalora's did and what you'll end up with is a generic Rothmans rep.

Real race bikes tend to be subtley different to reps. The decals are always massive, look at the size of the race bike Rothmans decals and then look at how big Honda themselves made their own 250 Rothmans rep.
They're nothing like each other and (I think) you need to make sure whoever paints it understands that they aren't to just use the Rothmans decals that they'll no doubt have on file.
Otherwise you'll end up with an NX5 that looks like a Rothmans '28 SP with the swingarm on the wrong side.

As to who does it, I dunno, I know Tez who owns Racepaint UK pretty well and I could ask him about it. It's not a big place (about 4 or 5 people work there) so if you took it there you'll get to see the guy who actually owns the place and you/we can impress on him how careful he's got to be.

Then again, look at the one Luca is riding and look at the one in the book, they're not the same...which do you want?

Hmm, the actual NSR250 (as in 1992 NSR GP bike) had an 8 spoke rear wheel like the MC28 has? Seems Honda was making the MC28 more like the NSR GP bike then the RS like Andy was complaining about Wink

Looks nice so far! like the rail section...

I never said the MC28 wheel wasn't like the RS wheel, just that it has the "wrong" number of spokes! Look at ALL the other Honda's at the time with proper swingarms and you will see they have 6 spokes front and rear!

I think Honda actually did a pretty good job with the overall look of the MC28 Rothmans. The bodywork is more based on the 500 than the 250 though, so it's really a bit of a pigs dinner when you try to look at it as something it's not!

If anything though, you do need to get shot of that rear wheel Rich and fit the correct "wrong" one! Laughing

Thanks Fontyyy, I agree the road bike rothmans decals are completely different to the race bike and this needs to captured in advanced of starting the paint job. If you could just 'float' the project to Tez at Racepaint I'd appreciate it. See what he thinks.

Andy, yes the Marvic rims are coming off. I already have a pair of original RS250 rims on the way from MM in Japan. The rear has the 'Honda Racing' logo around the hub.

I'm going to try to get this bike looking as close as possible to Cadalora's race bike. Appreciate the input All.

The NSR250 from 92 (as in the GP bike) has an 8 spoke rear rim. Maybe that's what Honda was going after with the MC28 Wink
