i bought an mc18 r4j, which has been parked up for years. the bike is now running and starting fine. i have a query because there seems to be the normal amount of smoke coming out of rh exhaust pipe and a little amount smoke from lh pipe (lower cylinder). i would have thought that there should be the same amount of smoke from each exhaust. i checked and both cylinders are firing, so my concern is that, there is no 2 stroke oil getting to the bottom cylinder. is there anyway of testing this??? should the upper cylinder produce more smoke than the lower cylinder?? can someone let me know, because i am afraid to leave the bike running and i dont want to seize it. the bike had a full rebuild before it was parked up.

Check the oil pump operation by disconnecting the feed tubes from the carbs, and running those to a container. Run pre-mix in the fuel tank and run the bike to see if the oil pump feeder tubes pump out the same (or close to same) quantity of oil.
i'd make 5L 30-1 premix up and go for a ride mate, blow the cobwebs out. Then revert to strait fuel and try again. If theres no smoke, theres likely to be no oil.
After youve been for a good run, get some carby clean and clean out your carbs, and check the oil feed hoses. Take the 2 hoses off and blow em out, hopefully they will expel oil _________________
thanks for the advice i am going to run premix and disconnect the pipes to see if oil comes out each one. i cant take the bike for a spin, because i have a broken thumb and my hand is in a cast, i have a month to wait till the cast is removed.
both cylinders are running sweet now, the bottom cylinder plug was wet. time for new plugs the plugs in the bike are about 15 years old. i have just drained the gearbox oil, but i have another problem. the dip stick seems to be cracked, i checked my dipstick from my seized mc16 engine and that is also cracked. i know it says the capacity is 0.7 litres, but i would prefer if i could see the level on dip stickl to make sure. can someone tell me what length the dipstick is from where the thread ends to the tip. i have a honda generator and the dipstick look similar, if i knew the length i could compare and see if its compatible. if there is another way of checking the level, dont hesitate in letting me know. thanks for all the help.
jerry.
no worrys i had the same thought also when i first got the bike. it does not work a great deal as on a car. the best way is to drain it properly and the fill up with the amount indicated on the crank case.
Next time if your drain a heck more then check your oil pump seal, you might have 2T in the gearbox. if its less then oil leak... but you will see it on the floor most porbably when you leave the bike over night. _________________ feel the wind
