Transmission "clunks" into gear

Fri Nov 12, 2010 1:09 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

More so than i am comfortable with and more than my other honda's. Not just when stopped, going from neutral into first, but when shifting into other gears, both aggressive high power output shifting and shifting slowly at lower rpm. It is MC21 with dry clutch, fresh 10-30w motorcycle transmision oil. I understand this to similar viscocity to 80-90 wt. gear oil. I read reference to rubber bushings in the clutch assembluy in another thread but cannot find them in the parts schematic. Are there rubbers? Any other thoughts?

I would guess at the bushes being worn in the engine torque arm. It's on the left side of the engine and mounted on the left end of the swingarm pivot.
If you look just behind the front sprocket you'll see the little arm.
Matt from Tyga wrote of the same symptoms you are experiencing. He ended up stripping and rebuilding the gearbox, only to find it was the torque arm.
It's there to stop the engine twisting as it's rubber mounted.
Only problem I can see to you fixing it is, I think it's now unavailable new.
I'm going to look into getting mine rebushed when it's necessary.

I think the rubbers on the clutch that you are talking about go on the inner friction plate to act as little dampers. They are little oblong shaped things.

Roy is right. The rubbers fitted to the inner clutch plate are only there to dampen the plate and reduce noise.

If the torque arm fix doesn't cure it have a look at the clutch steels and make sure they are flat. If not they will produce a little drag and can make the box clunk into 1st.
