What is this clutch cover from!!!!

Tue May 31, 2011 7:02 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey guys I am new to the forum and have owned my 88 NSR250R 4jSP for over two years now and it has been through alot but not ridden!!
I am fitting a replacement clutch cover with new waterpump, it was only untill I began to sort where each bolt goes that I realised the cover is slightly differnt!

Two of the mounting points require longer bolts to fit and the water pump is much bigger.

I hope you can see from the pictures what is differnt.

I am not worryed about using this cover as it is better from a performance aspect but I dont know where to get the two longer bolts required to fit.

Can any one tell me what series the cover is from, my old one is a 250R 4jSP

Cheers, Ash

"Old cover" is mc18.
"New cover" is mc21.

I think that water pump gear ratio is different as well.

Cheers for that can you see any harm in running the higher volume water pump?
Only problem is I have to find a pair of the long bolts to suit the 21 housing.

No problem running a bigger water pump.
Though, remove the plastic gear and the axle of the water impeller and fit them to the engine to see if it engages safely with the primary gear.

Someone that has made this type of conversion might be more suitable to answer your question.

Make sure you get it to seal where the gearbox oil pump feed is on the MC21 casing. There's a hole in the gasket face, bottom right of the clutch as you look at it fitted. Down where the clutch cable bracket mounts. Your engine doesn't run a gearbox oil pump, so there isn't a corresponding hole in the crankcase of your engine.
It shouldn't be a problem to get it to seal, just be aware that you may need to mess about with some liquid gasket. Early MC16/18 gaskets seem to only be available from aftermarket suppliers now.

Thanks for the advice, and as far as the gasket goes I found that out the hard way, clutch cover gasket 47.50NZD where as a full gasket kit is about 119NZD

Nope. Old cover is MC 16. New may be 18 or 21.
