Re-tuned PGM II

Thu Aug 25, 2011 6:50 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hey everyone, hoping you can shed some light on what ive got..

Story, when i bought my bike MC18 R5K i was told that the bike made 67RWHP but no dyno-sheet to back it up.. more seat of pants dyno i think. The engine due to a rusty crank in shipping had been swapped for a MC21SP engine.
I was also told it was de-restricted with a race tuned computer.

At the time the bike felt fast, and to be honest i just wanted it and had no idea what i was looking at or looking for.

Now i've realised the jets are all stock, the exhaust stock except for silencers (cheap china crap) stock un-modded air box.
SP engine i don't know (how can i tell?), but TA22B (MC21) Carbs. This seems strange on a "race tuned" bike.

Out of curiosity i thought id check the computer as its just a PGM II to see if the "wire splice" mod had been performed and ..NO! Shocked So i'm thinking damn liar, but hey extra ponies still available i'm happy. Very Happy
Then when i go to re-fit the computer its got "Racing" written on the back. Is it possible, Can these be modified / Re-mapped ?
I've searched but haven't found anything on the forums about this regarding these computers but keen to chase some confirmation before i run it with the wire splice.

Cheers
Lee

Anyone?
Also the PGM case looks like someone has pried it off before.

Have a look inside and see if any wires have been cut.

Cant see any cut wires.. its just a few electrical resistor type things sticking through some rubber looking goop. Nothing stands out as molested or non-factory.

Can they be hooked up to anything and re-programmed?

There are some factory HRC PGM's with removable EPROM chips but that's about all. The stock PGM-II doesn't have any adjustment in it.

I took a in the Tuning section in regards to the MC18. Apparently they fall flat at 10,000 rpm.

Now, instead of of the motor falling flat at 10,000rpm (despite how carefully you have set the RC Valves up!), it will pull right through to the red in every gear! A little careful jetting and maybe a change of final drive ratio should see top speed increased to a l

I'd start by seeing if you can get past 10,000 rpm in 6th. No doubt you've tried this Wink

If it feels more than 45HP and it revs past 10,000 rpm in 6th, then I'd leave it alone. Something has been done that's bypassed the restriction. If you haven't been past 10,000 rpm in 6th, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?

They rev beyond 10,000 rpm even when restricted. They just don't make as much power. The bottom end and middle feel very strong even restricted.

Sorry to crash this thread but Stephen do you have any more info on honda CDI's with EPROM chips fitted? Like were they available to any teams or the public or HRC backed teams only? I only ask as I have recently purchased a CBR400 race bike in japan and am trying to find out more info about the bike. It came fitted with this CDI with an EPROM chip:

Please ask off topic questions like this via PM. You may of course post about it in the Members Open Discussion too, for a wider audience.

Laughing hahaa Shyster, NOT on WA public roads though, obviously Razz

Yeah riding the bike through the gears ive had no issues getting past 10K, but hard riding / shifting always felt like i wasnt upshifting, but the downshifts proved i was. Maybe it was bouncing off the restrictor?

Ive emailed the previous owner to see if he has any extra info,

ALso recieved a request to post a pic of the inside, sounds like a good idea.. so pic coming soon as i can figure it out Wink

OK... UPDATE!! Just heard back from the previous owner...
Apparently its been "Chipped and tuned by Pro Race Team" also the bike has been "snipped and proper re-wired"

I trust the previous owner that he's saying it as he knows it, everything else says its stock but the performance is incredible for stock?

Pics on the way now..

I only have two EPROM chipped CDI's one is off a factory RC30 (around 1992) and a 1995 one off a RC45. I know Matt has one for a NSR250.

I got a selection of chips for the RC45 one which altered the ignition curve as well as hard and soft rev limiters. As far as I know only Factory teams got these units to start with but they did filter down. They were not available as part of the public race kit though.
