Gday guys, hope you can shed some light on another of my bikes strange personality traits,
its now decided it doesnt like downshifting into the lower gears when its warmed up to normal runnings temps. Its an intermittent issue but when it does shift its very smooth to the point untill the clutch is released you dont know if its changed or not.
When it doesnt shift, ive tried holding the clutch in again and very concientiosly pressing the gear shifter and it has no effect. Sometimes i can eventually get it to go, but its hit and miss.
I had the same reverse issue a while back with it not wanting to upshift under hard acceleration.
Ive changed the gearbox oil recently and the level is good (took 700ml) Upshifting no problems.
Side question, i need new exhaust gaskets - they are over $30 each here for genuine or ive seen an english auctioner selling some cheapies, for 3quid each or 10 for 12quid. Is a gasket a gasket? or is there somewhere else someone can share with me where to buy them?
Is your clutch fully disengaging? If it's dragging slightly that'll make it hard to shift. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Thanks for the response, I've ordered a new clutch cable to eliminate that but it does improve when I adjust it. Just doesn't stay fixed, maybe just a worn clutch cable?
Why would this only happen when the bike has been ridden for a few minutes and not from the start?

Because the clutch plates expand when they get hot, so if there's only a small amount of free play, the expanding parts take up the slack. _________________ MC21SP Plaything

Only if the old cable is stretched beyond limits - pretty unlikely really.
Did you use up all of the adjustment under the engine? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

I wouldn't say "hard to engage & dis engage gear" but the stock gear lever definately helps. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
Problem solved ( i think) the cable is stretched, ive adjusted it numerous times but always ends up with play. Ive had the cable too tight to the point its slipping when the lever is released then within a short time it can be loose enough its not disengaging when changing gears.
Still not sure why it only affcts the lower gears on downshifting only tho? Im guessing its because you can upshift without the clutch?
It's impossible for a cable to stretch, it's steel.
It's conceivable the outer could get a little saggy and compress up, but the difference in the travel between a new and old outer over one metre should be negligible.
