Hi there everyone,
I am the loving owner of a 88'Mk1 with the dreaded 18" rim. I live in the Midlands and cannot seem to get a 140/60/18 Alpha 10 rear anywhere.
I have always had GPR70's but these are now gone
Can anyone advise of a tyre choice that is available and grippy, cost not important, and does anyone know of a good supplier for these products?
I have heard of folk fitting 150 rear tyres, but I am always unsure of putting big tyres on a 4" rim and its effects on the handling it has. What are your opinions on that?
MKII rims are normally fairly easy to find, unless it's a magtek you have, and the 4.5" gives you access to greater tyre choices. I run the BT016's on my R5K and am very happy with them.
Alternatively, if you're not a purist, you can fit the 17" rear from a 21, along with a modified shock linkage to give the extra ride height. Then the choices are unlimted.
I put a 5K rear wheel on my 2J, mainly because one was for sale on David Silver's and I couldn't help myself
I does slow the steering down a bit _________________ Why do things simply when you can complicate them

In 140/60/18 size?
The 4.5" rim from a mk-II '18 is the easy (and cheap, the last r5k wheel I saw go on a well known auction site went for £35) fix, but you're just delaying the inevitable when good sticky 18" rears become unobtainable, the real fix is an mc21 rear wheel and something to raise the suspension. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
Thanks everyone on here for the info. The 17" option with the linkage plates will be the inevitable path I imagine for the future, will have to find one ....somewhere!.
I have found some mc 21wheels for my MC 18, but where on earth can i buy 2 x modified linkage plates to raise the rear ride height? I did see some on "That" site which sells stuff, but now I think I have gone insane cos I cant see them anywhere...
Thanks pvan! I have seen this drawing but thought that maybe TYGA or some one pre make these items. I have no access to a machine shop. I'm sure I saw some for sale, but either they are sold out or I was dreaming
You see them on yahoo auctions japan from time to time, but the cost is ridiculus. Will be much cheaper to search around and talk to someone who will knock them up and post them if you are not close to town. Should be someone somewhere who will be willing to make them and get them to you.
Any engineering firm should be able to knock you up a set, just take the drawings in. Shouldn't be much more than £20 _________________ it wouldn't be fun if it was easy!
Or maybe a University with an engineering focus? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

The drawing does not show the OD of the three holes, or a thickness of plate used? Also what material is recommended? Sorry for all the questions, but if i'm having these built i will need to know the detail. Thanks
The diameter of the holes will be the same as the diameter (slightly larger!) as the suspension bolts on the original. The thickness of the material will be the same as the original parts. Any good machine shop will have a set of calipers for measuring, take the bolts and the plates with you. Aluminium plate of the desired thickness would be more than adequate. Good luck with getting them made.
