MC18 Crankshaft questions. Again.

Fri Jan 06, 2012 2:50 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all, at the risk of sounding like a complete technical idiot, I have to get your opinions on this.

I've recently been offered a box of MC18 spares by someone. Cylinders, cylinder heads, CDI, carburetor, reed valves, crankshaft and a few other bits. They were removed from a MC18 before it went to the scrapper.

I took a look at the crankshaft, the bearings at the end spin easily, but my main question is, the centre bearing. I tried to spin it with my finger, it spins, but it felt like it had some resistance. Isn't that a tell-tale sign of a seizure about to happen? The seller was telling me that the centre seal isnt spinning easily cause it's been coated with grease? and when that's cleaned off, there's no problems.

Would really appreciate your inputs on this. Cheers.

Why not clean it off and see how easy it spins?

The centre bearing has a seal as an integral part of the bearing which would create a bit of friction.
The seal is fixed to the bearing outer ring.

Early and late mc18 cranks are not the same so take care.
