MC21 After mafket shocks

Tue Jan 10, 2012 2:56 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

So my SE shock can't be rebuilt its a bin job. The standard Rate shock isn't worth it so it appears I'm facing an aftermarket.

Locally wilbers is the best value at about 1k aud.

Any other brands I should consider of similar quality? Anyone know of any deals or had a particularly good experience with one brand?

Ohlins can be had for about $800 USD.

Before you bin it, can I salvage it for parts? It can be regassed and resprung, but I haven't seen anything about revalving it.

If you're after the SE shock, i'm not sure there are any parts to salvage!

Can you hang onto it anyway? I wouldn't mind doing an autopsy on one just to see what is in it.

Fwiw I have a Wilber's on my 21. Works fine. Once I get my calipers sorted I will see how it goes with the maxton rebuilt forks Smile

Only issue with Olin's is they are apparently a discontinued line for the nsr and you need to track down either nos or a used one.

I spoke with Ohlins USA couple days ago and they can get me one, takes couple weeks from Sweden. HO206 fits MC21 and 28 according to them.

Fair enough, just when I was looking a couple of years back while it was listed, i was told they were discontinued when I dug into getting one from the Aussie importer. Maybe they have decided to build em again.

SE/SP shocks can be rebuilt and revalved. I was running a RaceTech gold valve on mine. I believe main shaft seal is from Fireblade (CBR-900RR).

So I have committed to the wilbers (1100 AUD) . Both Maxton and ohlins, while I could get them a few hundred cheaper at around 800 AUD + postage, I think the extra dollars are warranted for having it built for me and supported locally. If they fk up the damping range they should rectify for gratis.

As ride height wasn't available we went with making the shock 5mm longer. With careful set up and attention to geometry we should get an excellent balance of weight distribution and ground clearance.

My SE shock was too rusty and nasty to be rebuilt.
