Sun Feb 12, 2012 11:03 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi guys,
I'm soon hoping to buy an NSR after a long break from two strokes. Back in the day we all used to use Castrol TTS, which not only gave good protection, but it smelled nice too.
Just had a look on eBay for ideas and how much it costs now and wonder what oil you currently use and why?..
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Regards
Graham

At the strong recommendation of Les, from whom I bought Noodle, and also from an 'old school' two stroke wizard from Fuchs Oils, I am using Silkolene Comp 2 Plus (or Plus XS...which is exactly the same but sounds more impressive!!).

TTS is not made anymore and nobody 'appears' to know if it's replacement is as good....I can't see it being worse personally!

Most of the modern totaly synthetic oils (specced for injectors) are, I feel sure, very competent. Whatever you do, don't used any castor based oils for road use, not even for track use unless you use premix.

Motul 710 here as well. I've had zero issues with any of the Motul products.

NSR-WORLD uses, and recommends Rock-Oil Synthesis 2 Injector. (It can also be pre-mixed without any issues.)

Any fully-synthetic 2-stroke oil these days (and probably most, if not all semi-synthetics) will be better than anything specified for the NSR250 15~20 years ago, however.

I've personally run TTS and never had an issue with it, and as you say, it smells great. I've also mixed it with Synthesis 2 without any problems. Personally I would use it in preference to any Silkolene product. Each to their own.

What is your aversion to Silkolene Andy.

It's not a confrontational question, I'd just be very interested, Any bad experiences?

My local shop in the 80's ran HRC backed CR125's and 250's, and they (HRC and the shop) always recommended Castrol's products over Silkolene's, even though they sold both. There was a greater margin in Silkolene, yet they would always push the Castrol. Honda teams across the world have traditionally favoured Castrol and Shell, and still do.

Later on (mid to late 90's) I dealt direct with Fuchs, and I found their approach very uninspiring. I don't recall a mechanical failure personally with Silkolene, but I do recall poor customer service. By far the most helpful and knowledgeable people I have spoken to in recent times are Rock-Oil. Steve's 75hp F-III even ran Rock-Oil semi-synthetic on that last Donington track day, and still never missed a beat.

Cheers for that guys.... Are you saying that Castrol TTS stopped being made then? If so it's a shame... The smell was fantastic.. I've sworn by MOTUL 300v in my four strokes in the past and got a great deal from my local bike shop so I'll see what they can do on the 710. I guess it also boils down to what the local bike shops stock or buy it in on line. I'll check out Rock oil and Silkolene offers too.

I believe this is the new Castrol TTS, - Power 1 2T

Developed for both oil injection and pre-mix systems up to 50:1

I have to say I use Fuchs/Silkolene but have used this stuff. It still performs and smells as good as it always did.

I run Rock Oil Castor oil in my racer. Not practical at all for road bikes but seems to work well enough. And smell good. And its cheap Rolling Eyes

Rockoil told us that Synthesis 2 Injector is actually a better oil for the NSR; either injected or pre-mixed.

I can't remember off-hand why they recommended it over Castor Kart 100 though, other than Synthesis 2 mixes with any other synthetic or semi-synthetic. I seem to recall though that Castor Kart was designed to be used with leaded fuel, in steel lined bores, at very high RPM. I'd bet the customary 50p that any fully synthetic these days is better than any castor based oil... other than the smell! Mind you, if you're getting it cheaper than fully-syn, and the motor's not failing on you, then that's ideal! Wink

Us convicts don't get Rockoil, so as much as I would consider trying it, it's hard for us to source.

It's cheap.... Embarassed

I ran Synthesis 2 in my RGV for many years racing, also A747.

But the RGV needed better oil.

Recon the NSR would run for ever on bloody lawnmower oil. Build quality see Cool
