Help identifying a Magtek rim

Wed Mar 07, 2012 6:57 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

G'day!

Can someone please help me identify what bike this Magtek rim is off?

I bought it for an RVF400 build and upon going to fit the discs realised they don't fit over the hub?

Upon closer inspection i realised that wasn't my only problem, the width between the two disc mounts is too narrow also.

This pic shows the side that still has the curved outer edge of the bearing housing same as the MC21 rims.

This pic shows the other side, which has a different shaped hub with a square finish and two small cutouts, which I am guessing are from a bike with speedo cable off the front wheel?

This is the measurement between front disc mounting points.

And finally i took this one to illustrate where the spokes blend into the hub, compared to the MC21/28 which have about a 20mm wider hub.

Any info is much appreciated.

Cheers

Chris.

Possibly an early RS250 nf5, do the disc mount holes go right through, or are they threaded?

They go right through, but i'm pretty sure my MC21 SP's have the same mounting hardware?

21SP's go straight through. you need long bolts to clamp the rotors onto the rim.

Here's the parts manual showing the bolts:

Just measured 21 magtek and RS250 magtek, and both are bigger across hub, i got a sneaky feeling it may have been machined down for some other fitment, or like i said earlier, possibly a real early RS wheel, 85-86-87, having said that, RS wheeels have threaded disc mounts, but could have been drilled out, but inclined to think it has been altered. Do you know what bike it was in previous?

I don't know what bike it was previously installed in.

I feared the machining route too, i will measure the internal distance between the bearings because i doubt they would have been able to alter that.

The distance between the bearings measures 70mm, and i believe the same measurement on the 21's would be 90mm, can someone please confirm this?

Curious because the bearing housings could not be machined any less, ruling out modification.

Can anyone tell me How many variations had the Magteks as options or standard fitment?

Is it just the NSR's and RS's?

Ripped my MC21 SP front wheel off yesterday to compare and took some measurements and it now appears that it has been machined, the Magteks hubs inner bearing housings have heaps of meat in them, enough to machine the housings 20mm closer together.

Someone has commented that it looks very similar to a TZR125 hub?
