Misfire MC21

Mon Apr 16, 2012 1:17 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I finally got the bike back together yesterday, (thanks to Rob- nxrsr20 for his help) and when running it is missfiring from the front cylinder. It has what looks like good spark, I'm wondering if it must be carb related?

I'll pull them off tonight and check the float levels and recheck for any blockages. Anything else I should be looking at?

well I went to remove the carbs last night, but thought that I'd first swap the coils over.. just for fun.. And the misfire followed the lead.

I'll pull a coil from another bike today and try that..

What do you mean by the spade terminals?? am I just looking for corrosion?

Cheers.

Spade terminals are not the nicest of connectors.
Quite often just pulling them off and re-fitting them will improve the connection.
I usually make sure that they are a tight fit and carefully bend the folds a little to make the connection tighter. Go to Maplin (or somewhere like it) and get some good quality switch cleaner (I can get it if you have any trouble) and go through the bikes connections unplugging, checking tightness and then spraying with the switch cleaner before re-connecting.

A little tip for all you folks out there with half decent hi-fi's. Play the first part of a record, cd etc (Not mp3 files as they are junk)...Then turn off the system and one by one remove and replace all mains plugs to the system. Refit and remove again. Now listen to the same bit of music again!
If you are not 'deaf' through not wearing ear plugs on ride outs ( Rolling Eyes Very Happy Very Happy ) then tell me the difference that you can hear.
Sounds a bit 'off topic' but it's not, because it applies to any electrical connection...bikes included!

Mike

re the spade connectors, you'll likely find evidence of charring and/or pitting. When I had this problem, I gently cleaned the blades with a scotchbright pad to get them shiny and then sprayed with electric cleaner as suggested. But I totally agree that the key is to get a nice tight fit, so using needle nose pliers, I gently squeezed the female connector and then reinserted the blade connector (lord this is sounding sexual Wink ). Tight fit, good to go. Words to live by, I'd say. Very Happy

Lucky I tried the coil before pulling the bike apart again!

I was the coil, I have another one coming ( it should have it this weekend) so fingers crossed I can book that ride day within the next week or two.

Great tips r.e. the spade connectors, I'll give them a clean and make sure I have good connection, cheeers.

when we cleaned your RC valves I also remember the plug cap came off. If you have enough lead length there, trim about 2-3cm off, and screw the plug cap back on (it literally is a self tapping screw at the end of the plug cap. If that looks dirty/corroded just buy a new one).

Yeah, I was sus on that Rob so we fully tested the lead/ coil/ cap before deciding that it was well and truely dead.

I got a coil and will be firing it up again on the weekend.
