Mitaka Pistons

Tue Aug 14, 2012 4:26 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello,

Anyone got any experience with these in an NSR? There are some references here to single-ring ones but can't find anything on the 2-ring replacement. Found variable advice on 'tinternet; some swear by them (KR1 owners have been feeding their bikes on this diet since OEM ran out), some wouldn't touch them.
One issue I have is getting an accurate size for them. Someone said '54mm' but that puts them the same as the low tolerance for a 'C' cylinder, I think. Sounds like a measurement taken with one of those cheap digital verniers so next to useless.
If they are only available in one size then I assume it would be around 53.965 (no mark piston) to permit fitment across all cylinders?
If that's the case, what are your opinions on running 'no mark' size pistons (or 'D' for that matter) in my 'A' cylinders should OEM become unavailable?

Thanks,

Brian

Can't comment on using them in an NSR but I have been using them in TZR s with no problems.

They look identical to OE in the Yam. I just use better rings with them than what comes with the piston.

So where have you seen these pistons for the NSR250?

Russ....What rings do you fit with them in your TZR? And specifically, what model TZR?

Mitaka's website lists only Enduro stuff (but there is a lovely tract on the vagaries of 2-stroke piston problems on the homepage if you're bored).
Matt, are pistons for 'A' cylinders still available? If not, what are your thoughts on running a 'no mark' one in there? Bike is for road use.

All pistons are still available, it's just that getting them at a good price is not so easy these days as supplies are drying up. To our knowledge Honda will continue to produce these parts, but there's a slim chance that like the old RS125 piston they get them made elsewhere and the price trebles. Worrying!!

As for this piston in that cylinder......I've used every conceivable permutation at some point with no problems, but it's just not the textbook way of doing things.

Get a set and try them out , do some investigations and then let us know how it works out .
If you can get the correct bore clearance and the ring peg is in a decent place then give it a bash and let us know .
As these are half the price , just inspect them at half the OEM interval Idea

I'd almost agree with this... but I'd say inspect them even more frequently than that. They're certainly nowhere near OEM quality.

It's not to say Mitaka pistons won't work, and I don't see why Honda should charge almost three times as much for a piston as they did just 3 years ago, but until Honda run out, I wouldn't recommend (and NSR-WORLD won't be) putting anything else in our motors!
