The 'Jigsaw' that I picked up at the weekend is running a PGM1.
Is it worth swapping over to a PGM2? I have a spare one in my parts box, so would need to buy a loom to make it work, but I have no idea about the differences between the 1 & 2.

Definitely go for the PGM2, have a look at the Model History on the left side of the page. There you will find more info. The PGM2 is much more advance than it's predecessor and the obvious, there's less boxes to worry about !
To do the full PGM-II update you will also want a PGM-II flywheel/pick ups. Though the PGM-I flywheel and pick ups can be used. You will also need a loom as you say and if I recall a second air solenoid. _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
There's nothing inherently wrong with the PGM-I, plus it's unrestricted as stock. Just leave the Black/Blue wire disconnected for full RC operation!
The good thing about the PGM-I system is that if the RC Valves fail, you can replace the controller. It doesn't kill the PGM like on the II, III, and IV. _________________ Andy.

Okay thanks guys, I'll see how it goes with the PGM1 on, it's only a wet bike anyway so no need for monster power _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.

I think Andy means if you're going to the trouble of fitting a PGM-II system you might as well modify the cases to make the best use of the ignition system.
Any flywheel will fit as long as its matched with the correct pick ups from the right model.
Or you could go the RS/F3 route... _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once more...
"And then you will want to modify the cases!" would've been a better choice. Sorry for any confusion.
As Steve allures to, the way the various "upgrades" of the MC18 R5/6K work, it can make use of additional machining within the cases. There is a noticeable "lump" in the 1989 mid-range over all the other models. This, combined with 1990~ modifications will create a strong motor, easily getting into the mid~high 60's hp range.
