Rust inside tank

Sun Sep 16, 2012 7:19 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have a spare tank which I am planning to fit when my cheapo fairings come down. Am mothballing the original bodywork as its too precious if it gets damaged.

The tank has some rust in it, I have got rid of some of it but not all of it.

Someone recommended sealing it, petseal, but I have read some horror stories about it.

Any recommendations?

or has anyone got a 28 tank with no rust inside lying around to sell me cheaply?

there are many products that people swear by. there are also DIY techniques to get the rust out by putting in small metallic objects (ball bearings for example) and spinning the tank. i just de-rusted mine with some vinegar and baking soda. just google away and there are dozens of solutions.

I prefer to use a length of small chain as it's much easier to remove.

If the fuel tank is not that bad then electrolytic rust removal will be a good choice.
If it's in very bad state, then use an epoxy sealer kit.

Step 1: used combination of nuts and bolts inside the tank, with tank packed with blankets inside clothes dryer (Heat OFF) set on tumble for 30 minutes at a time, repositioning it every 1/2 hour. We have an old dryer at the shop just for that

Step 2: is a product called Metal Rescue, some type of acid but it works well and it was cheap enough

before

after

Step 3: rinsed with water and then rubbing alcohol to get rid of moisture and that's what it looks like

For good measure coated it with Caswell epoxy
