Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:31 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello all.
Advice needed !
I want to fit a steering damper to my MC21 (road bike) and was wondering if anyone on here can recommend one.
If you think that your reply may infringe on correct content then please send me a PM.
All help greatly welcome, thanks.

Any old linear damper will do really. I've had good results with Ohlins and Hyperpro, and they are user rebuildable (if you have some mechanical skill). Meaning you can replace seals or oil at home with a minimum of tools - it doesn't need to be done that often.

Key thing to get right is length, I'll measure mine later from memory it was 280mm and I find it is just long enough with the steering restricted for racing.

Other than that a 41mm fork clamp (for std forks) is needed and make sure the frame mount has a rose joint/ball joint to allow for sufficient movement when turning.

Probably haven't helped much, with stating the bleedin' obvious.

Can I be dumb ( Rolling Eyes ) and ask the question..is a damper necessary on a road going MC21 (etc)?

I fitted one to my LC350 yum-yum years ago and that did help the overly light feel to the steering.

Depends what road your road bike is on. VFR500 (yep) at the Manx, no damper, went from the top of Ago's leap to Q Bridge lock to lock doing it's best to kill me. Parked up against a wall went for a cup of tea. Test road a MK1 Fireblade, after that tried to kill me, with more lock to lock antics, I never road anything else without a damper. Maybe I'm like Si and I just attract slappers !!!
