Hi just got my first NSR after wanting one for nineteen odd years , just wondering if the gear boxes are a bit klunky when changing gear it changes fine but is not smooth like the jap bikes i have had in the past , also do they leak auto lube oil down to lower cylinder as it smokes on that one a bit for a start when left for a while thanks for any help

Hello "elsinore77", and welcome to the forum.

The answer to both your questions is "yes". They can be a little clunky on the 'box, especially from neutral into first. It's a very positive engagement. However, make sure the clutch cable is properly adjusted, and that there are no excessive wear marks/grooves in the clutch hub/basket, as that can effect the smoothness of operation. Also renew the transmission oil and ensure it's at the required level.

All NSR's tend to smoke a little more from one cylinder on start-up, and it's a very commonly asked question. Be sure to warm the motor up gently, but giving it a few extra revs to help "clear it out" a little and stop the plug from fouling up a bit won't hurt. As standard the setup is almost always a little oil rich, which doesn't help either.

Hope you enjoy your new NSR! I'm sure you'll find it was worth the wait!
