End play in shift shaft.

Tue May 07, 2013 3:38 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Guys,

One of my MC21's has a bit of play in the shift shaft (cue the gags etc). It's about 6-7mm or so, enough that the gear linkage can rub against the frame easily, which seems excessive. I'm stripping the motor down at the moment, is there anything that I should be checking for ie a part missing/wrong model part etc that could cause this? Everything appears present when comparing against the parts manual.

I've just taken the clutch basket off, and the thin metal plate that sits in front of the shift shaft. Basically the shift mechanism can move freely along its axis with the plate stopping movement. Is this all there is?

I'll take a picture shortly. The clutch cover had gasket sealant on it, so I'm assuming someone has been in there before.

Cheers

Aha, it seems the last muppet that was in there didn't seat the circlip in the groove. Bent the clip too.

Gearbox/shifting problems. Help needed.

Sun May 12, 2013 7:16 am » Post: #3 » Download Post

Right, need some expert advice here from people that have reassembled gearboxes, and fixed problems.

My bike has always had problems shifting gear, usually 3-4th, but it was occasionally tempramental in other gears.

After sorting out the shift spindle play issue, put the clutch and case back together. Once the gear change lever and clutch cable were connected, I checked the shifting. Didn't feel right at all. So, pulled the cover off, disassembled the clutch. When looking at the shift mechanism with the clutch out, and using the gear change lever I can the star shaped centre shift drum to click through and rotate about three times, after that it won't move any further. Is this correct?

Looking at the star shaped centre shift drum, what position should it be in for neutral? How should it be facing relative to the stopper (part 8 on the F6 parts diagram)?

Should I be looking further into the gearbox for other signs af damage ie shift forks, or any othr specific areas?

Really appreciate some guidance here.
