PGM 3 Repairs

Mon May 06, 2013 3:08 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi Guys
Is this possible? I would imagine that back in teh day a fair few NSR's were chucked down the road and given the price of new ones someone muxt have got into the repair business???
Does anyone know someone in Australia who may have done this? Is it possible?
I miss my NSR - may have to get an RGV250 while she is off the road - seems to be a lot more of them around..........
Cheers Very Happy
Paul

There are plenty of working used PGM III's available, I would just look into sourcing a replacement.

Thanks for the tip Michael - I have had a look in the usual places and can't find one.

Any suggestions?

It is possible to replace the transistors that power the powervalve servo I believe.

Apparently, this is one of the more common faults with the PGM3, after 20 years of service, and only really happens due to lack of power valve maintenance. But,.. "apparently" is a very vague term.
All I am basing this on is that it says below:..... "Burn of this transistors seem to be many."
Clearly, I got this info from a Google-translated Japanese site:

Is a set of two repair transistors PGM3.
Is manufactured by NEC 2SA1385.

If the RC servo does not work properly,
Burn of this transistors seem to be many.
That the misalignment of the wire or failure of the servo, due to fixation of the RC valve, transistor is burnt is due.

Remove the back cover of the PGM, with cutter silicon
transistors Hojikuri, the failed comes out,
And you're done replace it. It is not a difficult task so much. It is OK if there is a solder flat-blade screwdriver and a utility knife.

Make of that what you will. I have not tried it, and do not know anyone who has. So I am not making any guarantees.
Hope it helps.

Hmmm thanks for trhe tip - looks like Yoda wrote it......

The picture is just as it looks - the thing that is an issue is the lower blue transistor on the right.

It can be repaired. I had it done by a guy in Greece, at a reasonable price. He advertised(sold repair) on ebay but is also a member here. I can't mention him because of advertising rules.

The big problem when repairing is that it doesn't look like the picture above. Everything is encapsuled in a rubber compound thats difficult to remove and in many cases the printed circuit has burned away and just left a black hole in the print plate.

What is the blue item in the picture?

Wed May 15, 2013 3:03 am » Post: #9 » Download Post

Hi Guys
I am not convinced on the diagnosis I have been given about my PGM3. Could I ask what are the blue capacitors/things in the picture above and what function do they perform? If one was damaged would it impact the spark when hot? Electronics are not my forte as you can see.
If I can't get to the bottom of it I may have to replace the PGM3 unit which is likely to prove a problem itself I am guessing..........
Cheers
Paul

As I told you, have it repaired. It'll cost you 55 £ excl. postage.

I guess he'll have a schematic too, so he'll know what the capacitors are for.

On the other hand, if you suspect the capacitors, why don't you just change them? They don't cost much and are probably standard items.

John, I beleive Leigh is the current owner of this PGM4 unit. He sent it back to me as "faulty" and as far as I can remember there were no issues with it and I just returned it back as it is. I remember that I've also sent some pics with the Pgm4 and the LCD messages to verify Leigh that everything was working ok. On some mc28 models, the TPS might need a minor adjustment though.
Sorry for inconvenience and I hope everything is fine now.
