A Tough Day - I have some folk to THANK

Tue Sep 17, 2013 9:24 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Well Donington 17-09-13 was eventfull if not totally frustraighting.

The shortened version is ..... having done a full top end rebuild over the weekend on the NXA and fitted new (read second hand), untested 'A Kit' reed blocks, the first session was about running in the pistons/rings and seeing what the new reed arrangement gave in terms of advantage or indeed disadvantage.

That lasted all of 3 laps as cylinder 'dropped out' on the start finish straight entering the fourth lap and it limped home to pits. Something seemed wrong and ive had that before when a reed petals have broken in the past.

Back in the pits Andy and Stephen came to investigate with me and didnt like the look of the plug on the top cylinder. We stripped it and to my absolute horror when i took the reed block out the whole bank of reeds, the retaining strip and all three screws were GONE!

With a sinking heart and a glazed look, i couldnt believe my eyes. Looking into the crankcase from the intake just looked horrendous Crying or Very sad

BUT Andy and Stephen were positive and supportive and to be totally honest, if it was not for their support and encouragement i would of gone home there and then to cry into a beer or several.

You would not believe how folk rallied round, getting it stripped to see what the damage was going to be, I have to include Fontyyy in all of this too and the lad with the MC18 whose name i didnt pick up on.

After an hour or so of some very well led encouragement and spannering from Andy and Stephen we found the bent retaining strip and two of the three screws, no reeds, they had been well mashed into a black carbon fibre/2T oil paste.

After some unconventional crank case flushing, we didnt find the third screw and was told the cycliner looked ok Shocked .... So the next stage was to throw the whole thing back together with a new piston/ring/pin and little end .... Once again ....Thanks Andy, you have no idea how much your support meant at that point.

Whilst Andy was helping throw the bike back togeher Stephen was helping out doing something different to help salvage a disasterous start to the day. Thats another story.

It turned out that we got the NXA up and running just before dinner time, when the rain set in ....... and there in lies the story, not completely but that's about it.

Have to say, when i joined this community having bought the RS as a 'Want To Return' to teenage fun ... and a bit more' ... i hadn't fully realised quite what i had bought and soon found out that an RGV250 and RG500 is not infact an RS250R ...

I was then looking around to find somewhere to sit and feel comfortable with the folk and knowledge that i had none of..

In here i have found the very nicest, knowledgable and enthusiastic people the internet can bring you.

As i have said earlier ... Thank you Andy, Stephen and all there today, the NSR-W family... It was memorable in the face of adversity Very Happy

Heya

I too, would like to agree about your comments regarding the generosity of the NSR world community, I've been astounded by the offers of free parts and time from strangers since joining.

cheers

It sure was an "interesting" day, Simon, to say the least! I just wish the rain could've held off, so you could've done more once we got you up and running again. The look of joy as you were about to set off on the NSR500V though, and the look of relief once the NXA fired back up, plus the fact you then got to at least run a couple of laps again to see that all was once again right in the world, I think just about salvaged the day... I hope?!

A little improvisation, NSR-WORLD style!

It was so good to be able to get you back up and running that quickly... almost within that one session! A little less piss-taking, and I reckon we'd have had you running in 40 minutes! Smile

You were looking a little happier 30 minutes later though!

Thank you very much for the kind words, Simon, and well done for managing to maintain your spirits and believing in us. I could see you were definitely welling up a bit a one point, but I told you to have faith! Laughing

Oh, and it was thanks to Fontyyy and his box of bits, that we were able to convert the 500V to "road shift" for you, so you may want to say another "thanks" to him for that too!

Good old Fontyyy, a guy that will do anything for you! Smile

I was heart broken for you Simon, knowing how much work you had put into the RS for the day.

I didn't hold much hope for it when we took the intakes off but once the cylinder was seen to be ok we knew there was a chance.

I'm glad it all worked out and you have a great basis once again and can rebuild it over winter.

Not you as well! Shocked

Glad to hear things are looking up and your right, the NSR boys are the best. Cant count the times Stephen, Andy and John have helped me out of disaster! In fact there are just too many other guys who've helped to name them all here.

I love you man....... Laughing

Sounds like you had two sets of emotions all in one day Simon, fair play to the boys, it would have been so easy to load up and gone home with your tail between your legs.

Sorry to hear about the problems you had yesterday Simon.
Glad to hear that it was not too serious (bad enough tho!!!).
Did you actually enjoy your ride on the 500 or was it just a case of praying you got round in one piece?!?! LOL!

Cheers for all your comments and support, much appreciated.

And yes, Fontyyy is indeed a top man and a brilliant character, helping out with the RS rebuild, a bit of 'Pit Crew' duty and cheering me up by playing Basil Fawlty's 'You Vicious Bastard' scene was absolutely spot on the nail, just what i needed at that time.

As now discovered 'Jonny Law' was the guy helping to turn the RS vertical whilst the 'operation' was taking place .... thank you Jonny ...

Innes, the 4 laps i had before the session was red flagged were just incredible. The first two i had to complete the breaking in of a new top end so was only giving 9k max and that was fine on a bike i had never ridden and of such obvious 'second mortgage status' should anything untoward of happened.

I was very nervous all morning to say the least .... at least the toilets were clean and well stocked Laughing

The two laps i started 'getting on with it' ... well , errr , hard to put into words really ..

Lets start with, just amazing, surprisingly tolerant, massive engine, frightening brakes, immense character, F Kin awesome .... the power wheelies are just something EVERY bike should do and you can actually change direction whilst the wheel is off the floor which is not so easy on my Blade but this thing is light ... so light.... however i didnt have much time to experiment with that aspect before the session was drawn short ....

That though is my over riding biggest impression of the bike. When i bought my RS and rode it for the first time i was dissapointed it didnt power wheelie like the 250GP bikes did on TV and i asked IE to give me more power.

Mine has improved and now does wheelie out of the Melbourne loop if i lean back a little and get the power on early but the 500 does it at will .... in more than one gear Shocked .... and that, IMO is a BIKE!

Sadly, i will have to make do with the NXA but i have a curve bender to fit, it now needs a new crank and refresh and i might see what other 'tuning' is available to give me more power ....

I need more power!!!!

lol

Sounds like an interesting day.. Plenty of highs and lows. I'm really pleased the NXA survived relatively unscathed, as did the 500V!

I’m guessing you’ll be wanting to change the crank just for piece of mind, I’ve been there...

Be careful chasing power is all I’ll say. It can come at a heavy price.

If I recall correctly Simon said the crank was very near the end of it's service limit anyway.
