MC28 engine strangeness

Sun Oct 13, 2013 12:25 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I've been having a strange issue with my MC28 lately. It starts up fine, always runs fine from point A to point B, but dies about a half mile or so after leaving point B (after ~30+ mins of sitting). Behavior is like the bike has run out of fuel - engine will start to sputter, slowly lose power, then completely die. I'll coast it to a stop, kick it over again, and it starts right up. Occasionally it will die a second time, but after that it works normally. I initially thought it might be a flat battery, but I've since put in a fresh one, and the problem is still there.

The only thing in common with all the events so far is that the bike is between 35-55C when it cuts out. Once it's past 55C, it works normally. I'm not saying this has something to do with the the problem, but so far, it only happens when the bike is already warmed up and has had time to cool a bit before I've started it up again. It doesn't happen starting from a completely cold engine.

Any ideas where to begin looking? Also, the bike has a 030 card with splice and Tyga chambers.

Thanks,
Mike

That sure is strange.
I guess that because it stops approx. a half mile down the road, I would tend to point the finger at the carb bowls emptying out.
Does it run nice and lean and crisp immediately before stopping?
I would make sure that the fuel can flow freely into the float bowls.
Check that the fuel tank breather is not blocked.
Check the fuel lines are all good and that any inline filter flows the fuel freely.
Does it make any difference if you are on main tank or reserve? Perhaps something to do with the fuel tap??
Possibly the float bowl needle valves are sticking shut as the bike cools down?? , but that would seem very unlikely.

Well, that's my thinking anyway.

It's had the 030 card since I've owned it, and the Tyga chambers have been on for years. Just threw that in there on the off chance someone might have seen something similar.

I think my next move is to go through the fuel system. Petcock and tank filter are newer parts, and the inside of the tank is clean. Doesn't seem to matter if the tank is on main or reserve. I would have overlooked the breather hole, thanks TuckerBag.
