Been ages since I posted here, now I need some expert advice
About 12 months ago I changed the airbox on my '90SP and did the wire mod to get some more hp...I took it out for a test and it stopped working (no lock up or anything), I pulled the clutch in and rolled to a stop, waited a few minutes and tried to start it but no go. I got someone to pick me and the bike up and then I just left it for a year.
I was planning to do a top end overhaul thinking it had seized but today I went out to get everything ready and thought I would just gently move the kick start with the bike off, the kick start moves and I can hear it has compression...there is no tightness at all, very smooth.
I've seized an Aprilia before and the back wheel locked at 90mph, it was totalled...does the kickstart moving on my NSR indicate its not seized, or a ring has popped or something?
I can get the bike picked up on Sunday and have a mechanic look at it but if anyone has experienced this before I could maybe save some time & money.
I plan to charge the battery on Sunday morning and try starting it. _________________ 1996 MC28SE (Honda Flash), 24,000KM - Drilled airbox, HARC Pro pipes, TYGA Hi-flo reeds, special manifolds, Ohlins rear shock & steering damper - SOLD
Bike has been sat for 12 months, not sure if it will make a difference. _________________ 1996 MC28SE (Honda Flash), 24,000KM - Drilled airbox, HARC Pro pipes, TYGA Hi-flo reeds, special manifolds, Ohlins rear shock & steering damper - SOLD
Considering you made a mod to the wiring and the bike stopped working afterwards without an appearance of a lockup...did you go back and check to make sure all the connections were secure?
In any case, the first thing I would do is take the exhaust pipes off and have a good look up the exhaust ports (with a torch) as you slowly turn it over by hand with the kick start. This will most likely let you know if it was a seizure or not.
I know it was a year ago, but can you describe HOW it stopped?
Was it a sudden (electrical) stop or a slightly less than sudden (possible? seize) stop or a slow (ran out of petrol) stop??
Maybe an intermittent thing followed by a stop?
As I'm sure you can appreciate, diagnosis via text is always going to be pretty difficult.
Any information helps, usually. _________________ [color=#808080][size=9]Yes,.. I too know how to waste Time and Money,...
Pretty hard to remember that far back, can't remember what I did last week
I checked the wiring and it looked fine, I will double check though.
I was going about 160km/h I guess and I suddenly had this feeling the bike was going to seize, hard to explain, but like a very small and sudden rise in revs...I pulled the clutch in immediately and then rolled to a stop. Trying to restart start it I got a really lazy attempt from the bike to engage, but it didn't bite.
I think I'll just let some experts look at it at the bike shop up the road because I don't have time to really go at it, hence it standing for 12 months. _________________ 1996 MC28SE (Honda Flash), 24,000KM - Drilled airbox, HARC Pro pipes, TYGA Hi-flo reeds, special manifolds, Ohlins rear shock & steering damper - SOLD
Hi
Almost certainly the motor has seized!
Just because you can rotate the motor now with the kickstart doesn't really mean anything. Once a motor has completely cooled after a seize then it 'can often' release and the motor then be able to turn over.
I am an expert with seizures (mc28 sudden loss of coolant !!!) and many seizures during my kart racing days trying to run in a freshly built motor too quickly for a race.
Cold seizes are also quite common...had a few of those...always make sure engine is fully warmed up before giving it full beans... ?
One thing that says it all sadly about your motor is that you say that it has no compression....e.g..damaged rings at best.
There is no other action other than a top end strip down. DON'T try running it as you will probably do even more damage.
Hope this helps..not good news though.
