Circuit of the Americas

I'm taking my NSR out to COTA in Austin Texas on sept 7 for the day. Not really a track day, its a riding school, but I decided it was a chance to ride a modern track. Wondering if the track has seen an NSR yet Very Happy

I signed up for the mid level. First level is for folks just getting comfortable on a bike. Level 3 is for folks who have race experience, but want some coaching on their skills. They also won't let the lightweight bikes into level 3 due to the top speed differential. I'm fine with that as i personally haven't raced in 25 years and don't need some 20 year kid plowing me down as he tries to stop his liter bike at the end of a straight.

The timing is good too since I have the jetting dialed in really well and Austin should not push me to have to rejet for the day.

Took all the lights off this evening, I need to fab cover for the headlight. New tires on the way. Ordered a smaller sprocket from Tyga .... hope it gets here in time. Local bike shop has new chain. Also have new sintered brake pads on the parts shelf. ill run around the neighborhood a bit to scuff things in.

And yes....my buddy has a GoPro that we will set up so I can hopefully post some video.

I'm very interested in seeing your video and very excited about COTA. Someday (soon I hope) i'll see a real F1 race and never thought I'd do it stateside. Riding an F1 track would be the ultimate. perhaps someday. 30 hour drive though.

My buddy just dropped off his GoPro along with a pile of mounting stuff. Wondering if anyone wants to comment on best place to mount the thing. There is also a helmet mount in the pile.

GoPro mounting

Tue Sep 02, 2014 2:05 am » Post: #7 » Download Post

Well my first try was to go easy and use the suction cup mount on the tank. It seemed okay, but after a 20 min test ride it turns out all i really did was take a picture of the house across the street. After review of the operating instructions I learned you have to set it to video. Back out for another ride... upon review ....turns out camera was shooting half below the windshield....not that good, back to the shop for some thinking. Last weekend I had fashioned a plate to cover the hole in the fairing left by the headlight. A few minutes of thinking and I realized I could cut a hole in my plate and use the headlight tilt slots on the fairing. Well here you have it, my fairing mounted setup. A quick ride around the block and all is good. Hoping to have some reasonable video.

My day at COTA

Mon Sep 08, 2014 2:24 pm » Post: #9 » Download Post

Well it was a great day. It will take me a week to sort out all of the video but thought I would post this photo right before heading out for my first lap. It's been over 20 years since I've been on a track so there was a lot to learn, not withstanding that I needed to fully appreciate how to ride a 2 stroke on the track as my racing days were on 4 strokes.

Most of the time I found myself coming out of a turn in a gear to high. On the last session of the day one of the instructors who raced 2T bikes put a headset in my helmet so we could talk. As we approached each of turns he kept saying..."downshift, let that thing rev and make the rev limiter do it's thing". Funny cause it worked. I did find that the 42T rear sprocket needed to be a 39T. Cause the bike was pulling redline on the straights so I found myself having to be careful. And coming out of the hairpins in second gear was too tall and first was a little to short.

He also had a GoPro and our headsets were linked to the video - he will send a blue ray to me in a few weeks. They also asked if they could use their footage for their Facebook page. I don't do Facebook, but if it makes it up there I'll check it out with a buddy and let you all know.

I'll post more in next few days...need to get to work. I will say the most fun part of the day was flicking the bike around on the S-turns. Watching the liter bikes pass me like I was standing still on the back straight was entertaining too.

Great to see you had a good day.

Those leathers of oyurs look like they have seen quite a bit of action. Can't wait to see your footage.

Enjoy....

Let's see how this link works. This is my first attempt at making a video and uploading it to you tube. Tried to use footage where I had the track mostly to myself....until the freight train of liter bikes came by.

The folks at RideSmart promised me a disk of some footage they made so I might have another one where you can actually see me riding. They sent an email saying they put picks up on facebook...but I refuse to get an account there.

Best part was watching this then watching the same lap onboard with Marquiz... Laughing

What's the different colour shirts for?

I am really jealous, over 3 years since my last track day.

A few more track days under your belt and you'll be carving the litre bikes up in the corners.
