mc18 racebike

Sun Jun 28, 2015 9:24 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'm in discussion with the seller of the mc18 race bike currently for sale in auction number 271914139037

However the chap has suggested an offer be put forward but I really don't know much about mc18 good or bad, what to look for, value of parts etc.

Can anyone give me any ideas if it looks a good buy or not and what sort of price it's realistically worth please?

Thanks in advance

Can't see any reason whatsoever why it's not worth at least the opening price.

Hard to make much more of a comment, just going on an advert. People claim so much, but often deliver something very different. (Ask many of our customers who bought NSRs under the pretence of them being rebuilt/restored/sound!)

IF the motor is sound, and if it has a close ratio transmission [not just an SP transmission], and if it's all R6K, then it's easily worth buying, in my opinion.

Thanks Andy. How do I tell if it'd a different gearbox? Is r6k tge SP if so I'd there a way to check it's a genuine sp model?

Thanks

I think this is the bike that a friend of mine bought a while back, it was imported from America and then bought by my friend who never used it, only got it up and running, what i will say though is, it ran as sweet as a nut, and if my memory serves me rightit looked as though it had at least had a top end re build before it came over here and hadn't been used since, i dont think it has been used in anger since it has been in this country. As Andy said, seems a reasonable price, and if its the bike i think it is, its well worth the money, my friend may be along to confirm later.

There's no way to tell, without riding it, or taking the transmission out. That's the kicker! Confused

R6K is '89 SP (R5K is '89 R)

Cheers Andy, should an R6K have a certain chassis number?

I know its got a dry clutch motor, and SP forks with HRC internals..

Nope, you've had it as far as numbers go! Honda seemed to have just plucked random bikes out of the production line to make them SPs (and later, SEs).

I'd still say it's worth the asking price, but bear in mind for starters, it's not got Magteks, or the correct R6K front discs. How can you tell the forks have HRC internals? Any by HRC internals, do you mean TT-F3 springs, or NF5 internals?! As I say, you just don't know until you get it all apart, what's in there, hence why you can only take it at face value. At the end of the day though it's a race bike, so likely a lot of it has been changed/broken/replaced over time.

As long as it starts, runs fine, and is all R5/6K (i.e. the harness hasn't been hacked to bits, and other electrics cobbled together), then I'd go for it. Looks like a great base to start from.

Thanks for the advice. I've decided to take it in trade. Worth a punt I feel. Should be a laugh provided it doesn't go bang as I hear you can't replace the cranks on these?

As long as it's not wrecked, we can rebuild all NSR cranks. It's the 87~88 cranks, with the separate centre seal, that can be a problem.

What's the price for crank rebuild Andy? Just for future refence in the event that mine were to go pop?

Likewise what is piston and ring availability of mc18 and mc28 (sp?)

Cheers
