Hi All,
I know thats possibly a weird topic (and my first post) but here's the thing..
Lived in NYC for the past 11 years and had a weekend bike of a Hawk GT 650 (Bros over here). Started stock and I modified it to stage2 carb mods, exhaust, VFR rear wheel, cbr600F3 forks and front wheel with the cartridges revalved with a racetech kit.
Moved back to London last year with a Mrs and a 2 year old daughter and to get the Mrs used to (me) daily biking got a scooter.
Obviously chose the lightest (cheapest) 2 stroke 50 I could find, Zip 50, and changed out the air filter, exhaust and PnB's to make a stock looking 70cc which wheelies off the throttle and does over 50mph on the flat..
Problem is Im not 17 anymore, used to bigger bikes and feel the time is right to get a 'big wheel' bike again.
I commute 6 miles into central London every day and perversely want to keep the 2 stroke theme going and as Im a Honda kind of guy fancy an NSR250..
Have settled on an MC21 but cant really decide on an R or SE?
Obviously I want the SE (cant afford an SP) as its got the dry clutch and more importantly cartridge forks which can be revalved like Ive done before.
But the R has an oil clutch which I think might be better for London stop start traffic.
But the R only has damper rod forks, you can of course use something like 'gold valve emulators' but thats still 1/2 arsed..
So..
R for the clutch and buy new forks??
Or
SE and live with a dry clutch (how many miles do they do?)
Either way I want to do the old cable splice definitely a set of pipes and then maybe a set of heads. 7.4 stock CR sounds well low to me, forks revalved and sprung and it now seems that one of the sponsor sites can rebuild and valve the stock shocks.
Cheers and looking forward to some decent feedback,
Marc
You won't have any problems with the dry clutch, unless you intend to pull away from every set of lights at 10,000rpm! Best mod is to just replace the thin [2mm] steel plate with a thick one, for a little extra spring preload.
An HRC head conversion on the front cylinder is worth doing, but don't mess with the stock compression. The NSR doesn't need it. _________________ Andy.

I take it you've never commuted in London then
SE it is then.
No, but we did central London and Ace Cafe on SS400 and TT-F3 spec MC21s before, and didn't have a single problem with them.
Luckily though, when I did commute on my MC21 (which I did for 3~4 years), it was all nice fast country roads, except for the last 1/2 mile on an industrial estate.
You would [logically] think the dry clutch is a weak point, but it really isn't.

Just a shame your company is so far away...
It's not that far!
We've had bikes in from around Europe, and currently have 3 motors in for tuning from clients in the USA.
We have plenty of clients from your neck of the woods. _________________ Andy.

Cheers all.
It IS only 6 miles so tbh if it does go pear shaped I'll be able to get the bus
Andy, this IS the UK after all and yes your right nothing is too far.
Might be going on holiday in November down south so if I get the bike before then maybe I can pick up/drop off some bits..
